What TV? (again! but with a difference)

Well I popped into Hirsch today to take a look at the Samsung PS42B430 and the LG 42PQ10. I spent 45 minutes there (it was all the time I had). Unfortunately they were not able to hook up the LG at the time but I checked out the Samsung for a fair whack of the time. The sales lady was a definite fan of Samsungs though....
I would recommend you stay away from the Samsung 50" sets but seeing as it is 42" I would go for the Samsung yes...
Obviously then both decoders work independently of each other? And how much is HD DSTV? Is it the same price but you just pay more for the HD decoder?
They work independently of each other but must be connected to each other via a RF cable as this transmits the all important heartbeat that ensures you using both decoders in the same household thus qualifying for the single monthly subscription fee. Extraview I think costs around R60 or R70 a month so it's your standard monthly subscription fee plus R60-R70 for extraview. You would use a remote blaster to control the old decoder as well as the HD decoder from the 2nd tv point (iI'm guessing the main bedroom). The pace HD PVR goes for around R3k these days...

I wouldn't recommend you do the installation yourself. It can be a very temperamental piece of kit, the hd pvr so definitely get a reputable dealer in to do it. Installation is not cheap either. Around R1500 I suspect but money well spent. The initial layout is a little steep but well worth it!!!

All in all a fair whack of around R12k-R13k... How's business???!!

Haha, you've been bitten by the HD bug :D Me personally, I would go the Samsung route hey. And yeah, the sub is the same except for Xtraview but the HD-PVR is more and yes, they work independently.

I'll be back in a bit I'm just heading back to the office to do some more work!!! ha ha

Yeah, it looked great... but I have to admit after posting this I went and did a little research and it confirms what Sand said, in for another few grand to get the set up! :)

Now, in saying that, the whole argument of "do I really watch enough TV to justify it" rears it's head again! I'm looking at my CRT and thinking I am experiencing the same entertainment as I would be with a new TV but just on a smaller scale... same picture, same sound, same laughs, same everything! ;) Damn me and my thinking things through!

DO IT!!!!!! You think too much!!! You allowed a little spontaneity and extravagance once in a while meneer!!! And in any event you can continue enjoying the crt from the comfort of the master bedroom. Pity MC's adult channel isn't going to happen...

EDIT: Even the Sharks look like winners in HD.... Ooooh... Low blow... sowi....

Ha ha you see that is part of the problem, it is bad enough watching the Sharks in SD on a 54cm CRT. A 42" Plasma in HD is just going to make those refereeing errors even more apparent!

Ha ha no need for the porn channel... I've run out of useful things to download during many a month over the last year and have a stash of standby download stuff that is sitting on discs unwatched! ha ha :D

hahaha, but seriously, you an okie that's into his sport, you got the soccer world cup just around the corner, the Sharks are only 72 hours away from there 1st Super14 victory, IPL 20/20 is in full flight now and it goes on and on and on and on. There is simply no comparison between SD on a 54cm CRT and HD on a 42" Plasma... Trust us... :)

If you hurry you could be up and running before the weekend but you going to have to gun it!!! :)Maritzburg got reputable installers or does someone from Durban have to come out and do it?

Get the 450, instead of the 430.
Has an extra hdmi port and a faster engine (and a few other little things, can't remember now).
About R500 extra.

Yeah I had checked it out... I see on the Samsung site it shows the following differences. These are the things on the 450 (430 opposite) :

Anti Burn-in Technology No (430 has this shown. this would be a big one for me even if I don't know exactly what it does but I am "scared" of burn in)
Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) Yes
Input & Output (side) HDMI 1 (430 has none on the side)
Input & Output(Back) PC input (D-sub) 1 (430 has none)

Two HDMIs should be fine for my needs (for now I suppose). What does PC input mean? What plugs into here? I wouldn't mind USB but neither of these have it. So yeah, I am not sure the extras R500 is justified for one extra HDMI slot. Samsung don't mention anything about differing engines on their site.

Here's the owner's thread.

Ask those dude's.

I've been to lazy to mess around with settings, the default ones work fine.

Thanks for the link.

I did a little googling and it does not help matters with regards to the 430 or 450 :)

www.testfreaks.co.uk :
PS42B450 - 9.0 out of 10
PS42B430 - 9.2 out of 10

www.reevoo.com:
PS42B450 - 8.8 out of 10
PS42B430 - 8.9 out of 10

Of course those are people's opinions but it is interesting.
