My increase is just over 12%. We have also been told that there is a good chance that we may get a double 13th cheque in December again.

No increases here, so I've found a new job. My reasoning for this act of treason? I know that a company will drop you in an instance if they have to, there's no loyalty on their part, but they expect loyalty from you through tough times.
It's a year since the last increase, I'm a year more experienced, which requires an increase before we even look at inflation related increases. In my opinion, if you don't want to remunerate me properly then I'll drop you. At the end of the day I'm doing them a service, so I don't mind going somewhere else, where they'll appreciate my work.

It's not a case of letting people walk all over us. I am just mature enough to understand that we are in the middle of a recession and are suffering due to it so increases aren't going to be as they were last year. It doesn't mean your boss is an *******. It means he is trying to do his best. Give them a little credit.
My boss looks after me and i know when the money is there i will get it so i don't complain and whinge every 5 seconds when i don't get what i want.

Well done - I'm happy for you. I'm sure your boss is there for you, and as soon as they do run out of money, will do their best to make sure you're ok.
I don't work for a small company, and to them, I'm only a number - so yes, I will complain about a DECREASE. You might not see it as a decrease, but the reality is anything below inflation is in-fact a decrease.

Out of interest, how many jobs have you had in your life? I've had two - and only moved to this one because it was agreed upon between the two companies.
So you're getting a bonus? I'm not, and you're 100% sure you're getting a 'much better' increase next year? I'm not. I'm pretty sure if neither of these were happening, you wouldn't be to happy.
Because I'm a bit cynical, what if I told you that companies use the recession as an excuse to not provide an increase. I would ask for the annual turnover figures and see for myself.
I know there are companies who are still making a fortune, but will plead poverty so they can ride the recession bus and screw it's employees over.
It's like food price increases, there's no reason for it but you know for a fact supermarkets are using the recession to boost prices artificially. It's like the cost of imported goods, prices go up when the dollar strengthens. But do the prices come down when the dollar weakens? Sometimes not, I call that screwing me over.
He pays my salary and that's what counts for me at the end of the day. If it ever comes to a stage where he can't do that then obviously self preservation would kick in and i would look for another job. However, you are forgetting that you DID get an increase, when majority of South Africans didn't. You also seem to be forgetting that finding another job in economic times that are this unstable is also going to be difficult. All i'm saying is sum up your options based on the situation you find yourselfl in. Is 5% really not good enough and do you feel you are 100% capable of finding a higher paying job right off the bat? If the answer is yes then so be it...resign and let the chips fall where they may. All i'm saying is be grateful for what you do get as a lot of people aren't getting anything and would love to be in your shoes. Look at it from all angles before you make a decision that has the potential to change your life for the better or for the worse.

Changing job every couple of years has been more rewarding than waiting for an increase. By changing job you'll get a bigger increase and a pay packet suited to you terms and conditions.
New clutch in there, gearbox has to go next.

No i completely agree with you in this regard. However, i'm lucky in the fact that i work for a small publishing house so the figures can't really be hidden. We know how well we are doing based on the advertising being sold. I see what comes in and have heard from several in the industry on how we are all battling to sell advertising. So i know exactly where i stand.
+1 it IS a decrease, and it's damn well insulting to pay me less this year for the same job and I'm a year more experienced. Disgusting!

Thats the thing - its just an excuse they use, thereby increasing their profits by paying staff less.
Currently, yes - I have many old clients begging me to work for them - I actually had an rate discussion yesterday with one of them, although they can't offer me more than what I'm currently being offered, I know I won't be a number to them - and will be given shares in the company.
And again, 5% is not an increase. If I could buy 10 items for R200 last year, and they cost me R220 this year... it means living expenses have gone up, and to keep up with them - my income needs to go up.
One of the other problems, quite a few companies in the IT industry will make you an offer based on your current income, if you continually take a decrease (as an increase), when you eventually look for other work, the prospective companies will offer you a rate based on your current decreased income, not based on your experience.
