What would you buy?

Best thing to do is go out and play both for yourself, then ask yourself what you really want to do with it - whether you want a gaming platform or a media centre. If it's gaming, then look at the range of games and the number of exclusives. If you want a media centre then a PC can pretty much do that so what would be the need to spend extra on a gaming console to do it?

Doobiwan you forgot to mention that all of that is your opinion.
The fact that a lot of it is factually unsound is sad, but I suppose thats the nature of a thread of this nature.

But I found the funniest of all your comment on the online play of the PS3.
The PS3 servers are great and you can play online on international servers with very very very little lag something which can not be said for the xbox.

I love how you turn your opnions into fact and then believe them so hard you will fight to the death to defend them! :(

Wireless network would be nice to get updates, and to interact (in some way) with my other PCs.

But if you put all your videos and music on the PS3 why connect to a PC?
I see a wireless network being more useful for the 360 with it's idiotically priced HDD

My mind is not made up, although the fact that you can install Linux on the PS3, is a bonus. I heard good and bad things about both consoles, so for me the question would be, which will serve my needs?

Honestly the linux thing is rubbish. Ever wondered why 13 months after release nothing interesting has been done on the Linux side of the PS3? It is completely gimped and was a cheap marketing tactic. Rather buy a cheap machine and install linux on that.

I live in a warm place. Even my PC, in peak summer doesn't make it sometimes, so heat might be an issue. The xbox, from what I've read, do suffer from heat issues. I will have to find somebody in the area with an xbox, to find out if it is a problem.

How hot can your place really be? The RROD problems are pretty much sorted now so you shouldn't have problems.

er ... can someone enlighten me on the HDD thing?

Xbox HDD is useless for anything other than saving games? What is the MS excuse for their overcharging on HDDs? Are they not standard?

No idea why they charge so much, I really wish they would sort that out.

I saw and this seems like a good deal, but where can I get it though?

BTGames.co.za or Kalahari.net after the 1st of November but Microsoft informed me they gave our the wrong price it will actually be R2999....

Thanks for all the input. A lot of info and arguments. I'll let you guys know by the end of November what I've decided on.

PS: This thread was really not an effort to incite people. Really.
PPS: I would probably be looking at the Xbox 360 Elite (because of the HDMI), I can't see that the premium have HDMI.

The premium and new Arcade models also have HDMI

If you are waiting until the end of November then keep an eye out for specials on the PS3 as they really do have to counter the recent M$ move...

Is a PS3 $400 in Dubai?
Anyone can confirm? Im thinking of getting one.

Thanks Gavin, will keep my eye open for any specials. There should be a few for christmas. Will also look at the game releases for the PS3 during this time, as this should be a indicator of how successful Sony was in wooing programmers :)

@Geriatrix
The extra R300 is a bit disappointing, but considering you get two R250 games for the R300, it's still reasonably good value. Wireless controllers are <R399, Wired are about R299.

@Abe, if you're going to accuse me of something please do so. I'm quite tired of you calling "factually unsound" with no references. There is fact and there is opinion, we know you struggle with the difference, but usually it's pretty obvious.

@Doobi, please red my posts from start to finish before you start crying.

Once again you post nothing but a sidestep. I guess we can just surmise that you're grabbing at straws again?

That's where you get your troll tag mate. If you've got something to discuss, put up or shut up.

elite is overrated. i bought one. R1000 extra could have been spent better on a xbox pro + wireless controller + play&charge + remote. i dont really know my foot from my ear with regards to networking but the 360 now connects easily to my PC (through the wall with the cable). dont need wireless networking. i still cant see the point of having even a 20Gb HDD without live! in SA. HDMI picture quality is worse on my new sony bravia than component, so i'd say if the xbox you plan on buying doesnt have HDMI dont fret. secondly go for the console with the most/best games that appeal to you. or just stay with your PC. *opinion alert*: i'm not an xbox fanboy - far from it, BUT, i wouldnt touch the ps3. due to a current lack of games that appeal to me, blu ray standards not on par(?), wonky controllers.

Ignorance personified!

Abev, have you played any X360 online games? Since most of the bigger games in SA have an abundance of local players we seldom need to look for international hosts to play against.

Unlike the PS3 ( which I do play online btw ) we have to rely on Sony's servers which do offer a latency of around 250-350ms and at times does affect your gameplay. Melee hits dont register but thats like very seldom.

The pitfall I find with PS3's online gaming thus far is the severe lack of the interface to accomodate my gaming requirements. I want to be able to invite friends who are in other games, chat to friends within a private channel, browse my friends list within a game to see who's up to what, etc.

Sony is getting to terms in providing us with those features but its simply copying what MS has done with LIVE.

In respect to your post above, they are simply the same about Doobi's or other X360 gamer's posts. You simply disapprove endlessly without posting any facts to the otherwise. Just admit that at the moment the PS3 is outgunned and being outperformed by the X360. Maybe 2008 will change this but Sony had also said 2007 would be "the" PS3 year, all hot air I tell you. ;)

Seriously, don't get the Elite. Instead get a pro with HDMI and a can of black spraypaint. ;) The bigger drive is utterly, utterly pointless. No really.

You do make it hard to be on your side don't you? The dude even says it's his opinion. He says lack of games that appeal to him (Only one currently available PS3 exclusive appeals to me). I'll grant you from what I hear, the Blue Ray comment appears to be wrong. Although there are some Blue ray issues they are fixing it with a firmware update? (I really don't give a crap about Blue Ray.), and it appears to be a general consensus that the 360 controlers are nicer, except possible for the thumbsticks not being horizontal with each other.

My thoughts:
1) PS3 will do better. It'll never be the PS2. Sony really, really messed up the marketing on this one.
2) PS3 is doing well in Japan, but not as well in .. Ok everywhere else. So logically I predict that developers are going to focus on those wierd crazy Japanese games, where you watch the girlly boy hero with long green hair moans about how unfair life is before battling the tentacle monster by playing a harp while his unattainable love interest, dressed in a catholic schoolgirl uniform turns out to be tha ancient goddess sent to protect humanity from a race of evil cat people, all the while singing "To Beeeeheeee in Loooooveeeee". So the PS3 will rule Japan, but the 360 will Rule US / EU and other places where people are actually sane. ;).

I don't count the Wii cos it sucks and anyone who likes it is is a Mario Wannabee and it's got fewer games than the Dreamcast, and it's the wrong colour and what sort of name is Wii anyway?

P.S. No, I don't get Anime.
