What would you buy?

Very true. This is one of the reasons I can't be bothered with the X360.

EDIT:

Oooohhhh looky. 2000th post. :D

There are well over 1000 local LIVE players on the X360. Its just a matter of knowing what to do and being patient with the system ;)

True they have, but most of the updates seem to be for added features rather than massive faults/bugs, similar to an open source type progression.

Microsoft has not released a patch to fix a major bug either? I think we are missing each other here?

And MS hasn't? How many types has MS released so far? And if you include the HDMI oversight and the new 65nm tech, then what is the really total? (real question, not a jab).

Microsoft has 3 SKU's. The lack of HDMI was not an oversite it was because the HDMI format had not been ratified yet. The better 65nm technology is just a normal evolution. They started with 2 SKU's and now have 3. They have no discontinued anything, Sony on the other hand has now discontinued 2 models and will be discontinuing the current controller from November (Japan) to March (rest of world0)

Agreed, it's always about the bottom line, mine included and thus I really can't bring myself to buying a consumer electronic that I know is flawed and can't simply be fixed by a little bit of software. I was on the fence for a very long time before the RRoD debacle trying to decide which way to go. I just wanted the best for my hard earned money (and my needs).

Hey whichever console you prefer is the right one to get, currently I feel the 360 offers the best in gaming choices which is why I am backing it for this Christmas. Lets see what happens next year.

Both the X360 and the PS3 sold at a loss once they were launched. But since the middle of this year (June I think?) the X360 started selling at a profit.

Oooohhhh looky. 2000th post. :D[/I]

Absolutely correct about the losses on the console and congrats on 2000 :D

I meant that I already do my online gaming on my PC. Tho I am a bit sad that I won't be able to play Halo3 online. :(

But then that's the only game I really wanted to try out seeing as Gears of War is coming to the PC. :D Should run very nicely on my PC.

@Doobi, please red my posts from start to finish before you start crying.
abev, i'd employ my own advice if i were you.

Ignorance personified!
how am i ignorant? if this is your level of arguing then i guess its worthless posting this reply to you.

Oh come on thats what he wanted!
...
Im just sick of people saying the same stupid thing everytime, "Oh the ps3 has no games" come on thats such an old ****ing line.
If you want to put the PS3 down atleast find valid reasons and stop repeating the same tired things over and over.

Truth is most things presented on this site are personal opinion, yet peolple continue to present them as fact, thats when I feel I need to step in. The only reason you guys have such an issue with me, is cos im seemingly the only ps3 supporter who refuses to back down against the xbox army that populates this site.

yet when i clearly state it is my own personal opinion, you wet your pants. i clearly said it is games that appeal to me, not games that appeal to the public as a whole.

at least the other people in this thread can read.

I feel that everyone who goes out and buys an Xbox360 is selling themselves and the buying public short. What the success of the Xbox360 (and it has been quite a success up to now) proves is that quality of product really is a bonus and not a necessity. How can a total design flaw be so acceptable to anyone how works hard for their money? I don't care that MS now throws a 3 year warranty at their product; the simple fact is their product was not designed right in the first place and should have been pulled from the shelves.
How dare Microsoft act just like Sony? Sony has sold many flawed products, the PS2 being one of them, and in every case they pretended there was no problem until they were forced to do something. I think Microsoft was wrong to deny the problem.

I accept that flawed products do get out. It simply isn't possible to prevent it. What I don't accept is when nothing is done.

I think Microsoft's hardware has generally been of a very high standard, although their software leaves a lot to be desired.

If GM pushes out a car with a flaw it's recalled
Not really the same thing. If a 360 fails it isn't likely to kill anyone. Cars that explode on impact or have steering wheels that suddenly come loose just might.

if Sony pushes out a flawed battery it's recalled
Very reluctantly and under huge pressure. Think they would have done it if all those batteries had been sold direct to the public rather than to laptop manufacturers?

Sony is no saint. At worst Microsoft are acting just like Sony.

Very true. This is one of the reasons I can't be bothered with the X360.
I'm one of those people, presumably the minority, who has no interest whatsoever in playing online, so from that perspective I couldn't care less if they ever introduce Live to South Africa. The only advantage would be if they sold Live points at a locally appropriate price. They're fairly expensive in Dollars and very expensive in Euros/Pounds.

Besides a slight graphics upgrade/crap dvd player/analogs there was little difference between PS1 and PS2.

Besides the Blue ray drive i can't think of anything origional in the PS3?
I disagree. I think the PS2 was a big jump from the Playstation. The PS3 is another big jump.

The PS3 is clearly a new, and interesting, design. That however is probably a mistake. The PS2 was weird enough already. They might have done better to go with something more standard. Maybe time will vindicate their choice.

360 but still the second generation console is going head to head with sony's third generation!
And Nintendo's? This is a lame comparison. Microsoft happened to enter the console market later than Sony.

The only thing sony had in its favour was the fact it had more games to choose from.
That is a huge thing.

making ps2 a memory most will choose to forget
I doubt it. Not only did the PS2 continue to sell, it outsold the newer consoles. And those of us who played games on the PS2 will remember the fun we had.

er. What was the flaw on the original PS2?

Could be lucky, but I got mine December 2001 as they arrived here and nothing seems wrong?

Not everyone will experience the 360 failure, so they could also say what defect, nothing is wrong with mine.

They have a range of defects related to the optical drive. Even the slim model has design defects in this area. The PS1 also had problems in these areas.

I gotta say I havent never met someone who had a ps2 that died. I had never heard of any issues with it, before this blog. Then again I have never really followed game wars. I decide what console I want and get it.

um this if a forum not a blog ;)

The PS2 had some quite widely reported defects, mainly related to the disc drive but not limited to that...

It is the norm for new technological goods.

lol... i think he got confused btwn lazygamer and this place Gav ;) ... its understandable. Yeah, the PS2 had some DVD issues but it is no where near the worst console failure rate... i cant even find its failure rate stats. Anybody know?

There seems to be a severe shortage of the Arcade titles

Last I heard is that you should be looking for them at Hi-Fi corp at the end of the week... I am still waiting for a complete response though

What is this Arcade thing?

Geez I've been interested ni consoles for the past month and so much has happened! pricing, bundles, Elite, HDMI, Arcades ...

Some camper is selling 2 of his 60GB PS3's for R4k ... worth it ?

I still reckon buy the console according to game prices ... and if theyre level on that field ... go for the one with the most game availability and selection.

Basically a core with a wireless controller 4 arcade games and Project Gotham 2 and Dead or Alive 4 for R3000.

Pretty sweet deal

Dolby, the Arcade has just replaced the Core as the entry level 360.
http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/arcade-confirmed-for-south-africa/

For the same price (R2700 RRP) you get:

Console (No HDD)
Wireless controller *New*
256Mb Memory Card *New*
5 Xbox Live Arcade Games on a disc *New*
HDMI *New*

So you can do basically anything with it except download large demo's from Live!

The only drawback is that it still comes with the composite cable, so if you want HD you'll need to buy a component cable.

There's also a bundle, that includes DOA4 and PGR3 for R2999.
