Whatever you do, don't win the lottery!

Tell this to the sole winner of R10 Million rand last Saturday. I had all six numbers, just all off by a few! :P They wouldn't give me my prize money.

Also all this psychobabble rubbish, happiness is of course a relative term. The lotto winners were probably bored out of their skulls by the mundane events quite possibly due to the fact that they have loads of money and someone is wasting their time :P

Personally, I don't get excited by much anyways, so winning for me would just mean financial security in life and the freedom to do whatever I wanted to do - which to me sounds like a better overall measurement of lifetime happiness than getting an emotional hardon everytime I read the newspaper (mundane event).
 
If I had $500m, I would build my own Space exploration company. No way it could ever be mundane. And I can't believe all you geeks didn't think of this first. R10m is nothing. It will barely cover rocket fuel.

I would call it SPIC - Space In The Cube.

This is seriously interesting!

I thought the article was going to be about how lottery winners suffer because of all of their money and they don't know how to spend it so they lose millions in a few years, but alas a fresh perspective!

I haven't had the high of winning the lottery but when we finished exams my friends and I sort of went mad (and I was hoping the whole holiday would be like that) instead people started working, res students left and now I'm alone at home and it's quite boring in comparison (even though I've been dreaming of being at home all semester).

I know I won't be happy, but I think I will enjoy being less happy in a fancy mansion with a nice car.

I'd be bored within a few weeks. Rather halve the money, invest half to maintain capital growth and additional income and the other half spend on housing, car, luxuries etc.
 
Even if I won, I'd still carry on with what I'm doing now - making computer games. It would just be a bit easier and more comfortable, thats all.

For sure. when I say friends I mean casual friends/acquaintances and family. You are always going to have people around you who see you as their meal ticket and will come to you with sob stories. Best to keep it under wraps or underplay your winnings. Sorry I only won a mill and used most of it to pay off the house.
 
I would also have no problems with winning... would completely abandon IT and just go into photography full time. Specifically travel photography...
 
I would also buy myself a seat into space .

For *close friends and family i would offer to settle all their current debt.

Invest the majority portion for financial security for my son and wife.




*To test if they are close friends , i would phone and ask them come bail me out of jail in a neighboring country very late at night .

If you are unhappy with winning the lotto due to no further 'happiness peaks' then you have no imagination. I can imagine plenty to do with cash that will give me another 'happiness peak' day after day.
 
This is true for most anything in your life that made you extremely happy/thrilling. Like the first time you go sky driving isn't as exciting as the 2nd time etc. In the end you just get better at it and then you start looking for other thrills, base jumping etc.

Not just coupled to winning the lotto.

climb mount Everest (not the dumb base camp tour), actually to the peak. I'd have the resources and time then to train properly and do it. Maybe do Kilimanjaro as a test run etc

Go to space, hell if that douche from Cape Town can do it, so can I when I have $500 million! Many many other things. People who win the lotto though end with "buying the house/cars they always wanted"
