What's going on today?

It is going to be interesting to see what speeds are like in the morning - its the beginning of a new month - all the capped guys will be on and maybe the new deterioration continues - maybe we will have negative traffic flow!

YAY - i think all my speeds are back to normal now - im getting pings below 50 and my speed test is over 100kbps. This was just a bad weekend

Today reminds me of what a friend said when I first got ADSL and he saw how fast it was - he said: "This is as good as it will ever be...from now on it will only get worse", obviously referring to Telkom on the one hand and the take-up of ADSL which would inevitably lead to poor contention ratios.

Is this really the type of bandwidth we have to get used to? Surely something must be up when a modem beats ADSL - and yet despite all my scouring, I haven't come across a single notice that could explain the poor performance of the last few days (today being the worst).

As usual Telkom's silence is deafening.
... I phoned 0800375375 to be told to test my speed at www.telkom.co.za/dsl - guess what - that speed test tells me eveything is hunky dory ....

Obviously the speed from that page would be fine.

It sits right on Telkom's server and network. Allmost a short circuit to your ADSL connection.

The proof would be if that same test was run from a server with M-Web, Tiscali and IS. At least one would possibly then know about the real national speeds.

Well, if I do a tracert to www.telkomsa.net I get:

Oh dear. Something seems to be broken in Telkom land.

Hi

Listening to all you people I am actually glad that I am on dial-up! (Would rather be on Broadband - The international type i mean)

Amazing isn't it.

Here is a thought. Why not boycott Telkom by just REFUSING to pay for the service until it improves. I bet that way they will take notice, especially if a few hundred people do it at once.

Just a though [}:)]

Unfortunately, I am one of the few people left in the world who actually uses his phoneline to communicate to the outside world. I can't simple not pay, as Telkom would just cut my line.

On another note, I've applied for a normal telephone line 2 months ago. Still waiting (actually, I'm not entirely surprised).

I'm definitely contemplating cancelling my subscription. I have had just problems after problems with this ADSL. 56k modem was never a problem for me [xx(]

Oh yeah, I'm still having speed problems. Gotta love this third world country we call home [8D]

Surprise surprise - the line is running ok this morning -hope it keeps this up

Hay all

here is something that might be news to you all...

just found out that Telkom is in big Trouble for international browsing. bandwith utilization ... must be more to it that that though.

they really know how to mess the service up ... lost a few good clients on their Stupidity ...

Lost a few good R80.000 per client.
so you can imagin how agro it makes me .

and they still have the decinsy to say "its not us sir, its your machine, please reset your adsl and machine 3 times and the speed will imporve" they must not write a check, that their body cant cash!!![:(!][:(!]

If I may ask, where did you find this out? It would explain the reason for our crap service over the last couple of days. Does this mean that Telkom are skimping on buying international bandwidth and milking us for it???

Man this really pisses me off!

WELL, its not really important where i souced the info from.
it might be the case. but have sort of an idea its on that reason

sad though that we must suffer

I believe its real important to know where the information comes from. If, as a group, we intend having influence in our dealings with Telkom - we cany have "i just found out" as a basis for discussion.
Why not share with us - we are all on the same side

One would think the speed test on the Telkom ADSL page would be nice and fast. My results today:

Your line speed is approximately 12.1 Kbps or 1.5 kBytes/sec

Unbelievable!!

Argh! Am so irritated. I have not been able to download mail the whole day. I get a message saying the pop3 server I named cannot be found.... I am entering pop3.telkomsa.net and pop3telkomsa.net and neither work - is anyone else experiencing the same problems? Does mail act independently of the download cap / crap? (sorry - very entry level computer user here).

i know this because telkom told me today they are fully operational.
no hichups, and he said he would put his head on a block if he was lying.

besides that. one of our representative (telkom guy) has confirmed that there is alot of problems and they were not adsl ready.

i would not be suprised if they are buying international bandwith and milking us as SuPaStA says

hopefully this will give telkom the blow that they need to realise that they need to do something about their sh*t service!

This is really odd hearing how the speeds have slowed down as we haven't slowed at work at all. Although still in the midst of trying to convince Telkom that I CAN get ADSL at home, I at least have ADSL at work. I requested a daily report of my usage and a few days in it just stopped at 770 MB used. Since then I have had a daily report telling me the exact same figure. And our speeds have been fine! As we use about 100 to 150 MB per day it is usually cutting it fine by the end of the month but this month it appears nobody has been working...lol Could this be because we are a company account?
Hope all your speeds are good now that we have entered a new month. Do you suppose Telkom will give us a credit for the "non-usage".....hee hee..

Today has been fine, however for the last 20 minutes or so if
I try access anything international I get:

Code:
A gateway timeout occurred. The server is unreachable. Retry the request.

Seems like Telkom issue, I get this for sites that are hosted in all parts of the world....[:(]
