Tomato, Never seen one before? What's that red shxt?
Hey @epah, watch your manners, this person was asking a simple question politely. Be Nice else keep quiet.. And FYI they from east Africa not west Africa..Rice is not a staple food in South africa, Rice is not something we care about, Since you are from west Africa go find a Nigerian shop/restaurant and rather buy rice there. there should be plenty of shops in your area.
Tomato, Never seen one before?
Okay Jan Van.I'm not a vegetarian
Firstly maybe its so bland because you eating Tastic?
Secondly. you want to say rice is more bland than Pap?
I’ve chowed every kind of rice you can think of. Home-cooked, fancy restaurant, ethnic, in Asia, cooked by guys who can’t speak English, everything. There’s hardly any dishes where the rice adds something worthwhile. In fact there are only two dishes where the rice really does anything: sushi (the vinegar does the heavy lifting in terms of flavour, and the rice actually has the job of being bland), and biryani (the masala does the work and again the rice is there to cut the flavour). You’ve clearly not had a really good rice then.
I’ve chowed every kind of rice you can think of.
But noone can think of all 40k varieties.Wow
There are more than 40,000 varieties of cultivated rice (the grass species Oryza sativa) said to exist. But the exact figure is uncertain. Over 90,000 samples of cultivated rice and wild species are stored at the International Rice Gene Bank and these are used by researchers all over the world.

You are right, Rice is bland and I dont really enjoy it, and I hate when it goes up the wrong pipe and comes out through the nose.I’ve chowed every kind of rice you can think of. Pap is crap too, I’ll give you that. Arguing about what’s more bland between rice and pap is like arguing which is worse between EFF and ANC. The answer is both of them.
I salute you SirBut noone can think of all 40k varieties.
Because they’re forgettable and bland.
But that is most starches?I’ve chowed every kind of rice you can think of. Home-cooked, fancy restaurant, ethnic, in Asia, cooked by guys who can’t speak English, everything. There’s hardly any dishes where the rice adds something worthwhile. Potatoes and pasta do something in their dishes. You can design a dish around them. They are the best starches. But that is most starches?
A boiled potato is pretty bland?
Apiece of white bread is pretty bland with nothing on?
Same with rice and pap. You have to add something over it.
Yo @EastAfricaGuyUpdates:
Thank you everyone for your hospitality.
For today I gonna start with recommendation from @SauRoNZA.
A bit expensive though, R89.99 for 2kg. Oh my god! Let's see.
If it doesn't work out, @UB40 rec. will be next.

Don't go searching for rice everywhere in Cape Town , it's not safe. Just go to any major shop and buy this:Guys, I'm new to this country, I'm from East Africa.
I live in Cape Town.
I have been trying to cook rice, but I always end up throwing it into the bin.
Why? The rice feels like plastic, especially when it gets cold.
Someone told me the reason is that most S.A rice is not as quality as what we eat from East Africa.
All am asking is which/where brand of rice is the best? I have been told if I want quality rice I should look around grocery stores owned by Indians, Malawians etc. But can't find them in the neighbourhood.
Below is the rice which I have been trying to cook. I bought it from Pick n Pay. It tastes very bad.
