WhatsApp alternatives in 2023

South Africans who distrust WhatsApp owner Meta Platforms or those who simply want to try something new have a myriad of instant messaging (IM) mobile apps to choose from.

With over 2 billion active users by March 2023, WhatsApp is the world's most popular messaging app by a significant margin.

If privacy is the main concern, Session is also something to look at. also does not need phone number to sign up.
But cant see people dropping WhatsApp.

"Threema: The app’s home country is Switzerland, which is reputed for its strong privacy laws"

LAWL!!!
If the French authorities want your details, they simply work via Interpol. Switzerland have no option but to comply.
What's with this "Swiss privacy laws are stronger than the rest of Europe's' nonsense?

It's the same rubbish that people still believe that banking in Switzerland is anonymous.

2 billion Whatsapp users, 200,000 Telegram uses.

That's the choice unless you want to pay for it, use an Android, or use one of the rest and have nobody you know to message.

Until they won't mess up with ads, will keep using it.

I've been off WhatsApp for 3 years now and although the alternatives are all good (including many more not listed) it is really only Telegram where I have most of my contacts. I have most of the alternatives also installed, but only about 3 or 5 people on them. With Telegram I have almost all my contacts as well as my local neighbourhood community.

But most users don't seem to realise they can actually have 10 or more messengers installed. They seem to stick to just one messenger.

But yes, I left WhatsApp when their T&C included passing metadata upstream to Meta and advertisers. I don't need my location data, waking times, contacts, etc passed upstream.

Saffas are used to oppression, WhatsApp is heaven compared to our daily struggles.

Work colllegues, family and friends all use whatsapp. I have no choice.

Personal number...only Telegram. Work phone I had to install WhatsApp for work.
That said. For work I will use Google Messages more and more. Our entire company use Samsung so all now should have RCS enabled after Google started activating it in the background.

WhatsApp is the only App. Stop trying so hard.

Telegram is freaking joke. I probably have 300 messages like this and all I see....

It's one of this apps you use once and then never again. Unless you use it for bots and smart stuff....
