WhatsApp calling growth flat

Yea becuase networks either throttle or charge you to death for data calling via whatsapp.

When we have whatsapp calling half the time neither one can make out what the other is saying so we switch to voice.

Funny how I can make whatsapp calls while on my wifi, but when on mobile data, it suddenly does not work.

Watch it grow when iOS 10 gets released. Its such a mission to pick up a whatsapp call on iOS. Once they integrate into the new Voip API, there should be a bigger uptake by iPhone users.

Aren't there like 800 000 iOS users on Vodacom's network? Don't think iOS 10 will give the boost you think it will.

No surprises here - number of voice calls are decreasing - being replaced by IM.
Just because WhatsApp can do voice, does not mean people are going to start voice calling - it's already in a steep decline.
How does VC know if it's a voice call - isn't WhatApp encrypted?

As per the article "The effective price per minute on Vodacom’s network was also reduced by 16.9%, which made traditional mobile voice more attractive". If the price reduction was in response to the potential threat from WhatsApp then it has had some effect on mobile voice revenue.

Every time I use whatsapp voice calling, it sounds like im talking to somebody on the other side of the globe, or the moon, the delay is so bad.

Where do these calls get routed?

Its a pretty bad service tbh..

Most of my customers use Whatsapp calling for overseas calls and Vodacom (and MTN) can rest assured that they wouldn't get this as voice traffic if Whatsapp wasn't available!

I doubt very much indeed if Vodacom throttle Whatsapp calling! More likely it is due to Vodacom's network congestion.

The echo is probably the result of the same congestion, I've used (and still do from time to time) Whatsapp calling to Canada and the UK on both MTN and Cell C and can't say that I've ever had an issue...

If it's easier to answer a call it might. Right now it's a schlep and sort of hit and miss.

This did not happen. According to Vodacom’s latest figures, the company has seen little growth in WhatsApp calling on its network in recent months

How can Vodacom track this if Whatsapp is now encrypted?

I was speaking with a friend in Ireland and the quality of the call was excellent with no delay on the call. I suspect that the whatsapp voice calls are being routed via Europe.

Just because they can't see what's in it doesn't mean they can't see it.
If you use a VPN one can still see that it's VPN traffic, one is just not sure what is being transferred within the VPN.

I'm on MTN via Afrihost.. about 90% of my lengthy calls are via Whatsapp.. one thing I have noticed though is that there is sucky data handovers i.e. hard handover a lot of the time when switching access layer medium from e.g. LTE to 3G which kills the call and then i restart it. Where the access medium remains the same, soft handovers are possible such that call continues.
