WhatsApp for Android tests GIF update

Tested this earlier. It's a joke. The GIFs don't play automatically and they don't loop. Defeats the point of a GIF. Telegram has supported GIFs properly for ages already.

Why not just support copy/pasting GIFs natively, like most other top IM solutions? Why stay stuck in 2010?

I cannot get this to work. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. V2.17.10

I only discovered yesterday that Telegram has a built-in bot called @gif that does the same thing as described here but with much better quality GIFs. Just type @gif, then your search terms and let it provide suggestions. Click one to send. I'm using them more than stickers now.

You can also send almost any internet image using @bing. Works the same way. Incredibly useful.

Rip and send any SoundCloud track using @GetMusicBot. Plays in Telegram. List lyrics for a song with @iLyricsBot.

List any movie's info and poster with @imdb.

And we just got themes for the desktop client. Jesus I already thought Telegram was good - now I'm in love with it.

I just go Attach -> Gallery and then the options at the top are "Photos", "Videos" and "GIFs"

Tested with a friend. We sent 3 GIFs to each other. Each one had to be clicked on to download and then played once and stopped. Upon re-entering the chat, some of them would loop a few times and then stop. Others still looped once. And the quality of the Giphy GIFs that were popping up was awful. Like the worst crap on the internet.

We're talking about the Giphy integration specifically, although GIFs in general have worked poorly in WhatsApp for me. As described above.

Hang on. When I click on the GIF option, as described in the article, everything just plays in the box... yours don't? do you just see stills?

Ah ok. So i did misunderstand.

I also had an issue the other day where I sent a GIF and it appeared as a static image in WhatsApp. I assume the file size was too big. Tried the same file in Telegram and it worked no problem.

GIFs are just so much better in Telegram. They always work, load automatically, are always sized to be entirely visible and loop infinitely. Which reminds of GIFs in WhatsApp that had to be viewed full screen to see properly.

I see stills with the download button to download them. Once downloaded it's as described above. They play once or loop a few times and stop.

No. Once the GIFs have sent. That's just the search result/ suggestions window.

So once you send it, it has a little circle with the word GIF in it which you need to press in order for it to play. Ok.

The think I don't like about Telegram's GIF service, is that it converts gif to little movie files (to save filesize) which means I can't save it as a .GIF file to my phone/pc.

I'd say the benefit of having great looking GIFs and lower file size is definitely worth that downside. And you should be able to send the GIF as an uncompressed file if you want to transfer it over Telegram properly.
