WhatsApp testing video calling

Whatsapp needs to stop linking an account to a cellphone number and bring in a username/password authentication model rather.

Why? It is one of the reasons why they grew so quickly. Telegram has got a username option where you can just give out your username instead of your number, but that is complimentary to the cell number, not a replacement.

Because not everyone who wants to use Whatsapp has a device with a sim card in it.

It may have been the best option at the time but these days being tethered to a single device and sim card/cellphone number is a schlep. I'd like to be able to send messages from my tablet or computer without it relying on my cellphone.

Telegram can do that.

Surely you have a phone around. Get the code on the phone type it in on the tablet.
The phone number in whatsapp is your username.

Whatsapp is not fixed to the SIM. I installed Whatsapp on smartphone, but confirmation SMS received on the dumb phone with different SIM. Problem is that desktop client will not receive messages unless phone client is online. So desktop client works just as remote keyboard.

Telegram is not restrictive on this issue. Similar with Viber, but all consider mobile client as a primary client. You must have mobile client to activate service. I also tried Signal, but it requires Android phone, which I don't have.
