WhatsApp voice calling is here (for Android)

Anyone tried it out for a lengthy call, like an hour? How much data did it chomp?

Does this come with a configurable mailbox of sorts? Or does it divert to your mailbox set up through your service provider? Just wondering if it's possible to leave a message (ala regular voice dialing).

Yeah tap the mic next to the text input in a chat. They had that for some time now...

Also the voice quality and the echo! I am sure they will improve.I don't know how much bandwidth is used per call?

No, that I know about. I was more referring to when you call someone (through Whatsapp) but they don't answer. Does it just keep ringing and ringing until you disconnect or does it go through to some sort of voicemail.

Not that it makes a big diff I suppose...

I get delays on WiFi sitting 2 meters apart from the other recipient.

This is no different to Viber.

also delays on ringing. it's the whatsapp servers which are slow. you hear the ringing as soon as you connect with the whatsapp server, but it only starts ringing on the other phone, once that server can contact the recipients phone. I've had delays of up to about 10 to 20 seconds.

Just phoned someone in Belgium. Spoke for 4:15 (4min 15sec). Took 2.33mb according to my phones data usage monitor. No delay, but we were both on wifi.

So far WhatsApp calling has been pretty useless, probably due to connectivity. But more often than not, the other person answers the call, but it doesn't connect, or the echo is terrible, or there is a huge lag. Perhaps this gets sorted out sometime soon.

I keep getting missed calls from people. Phone doesn't ring, but I get the missed call notification afterwards.

I have noticed that sometimes when someone attaches a picture or video, it sometimes sends a missed call.

hmmm, interesting, haven't seen that yet. Maybe it's because the the two buttons (attach and call) are so close together, and people maybe tap it by accident?
