If the iPad has no sim slot you can't. Whatsapp is connected to a cell number and an sms is sent to the number to activate.

It doesn't work easily. There are some workarounds that can be done (Google), but not if you have a Wifi only iPad

web.watsapp.com works on my tablet if I request desktop mode (sometimes have to request several times).

You can have the pin sent to a sim in another device... the sim does not have to be in the device you are using WhatsApp on

Shut up with Telegram...

Question was about WhatsApp.

Back in the day the App could be installed on an iTouch (iPod Touch) even.

Telegram! Sorry. Couldn't resist. :D

I still think that it's bull**** that WhatsApp is not available for the iPad or as a proper desktop app. Telegram proves that it can be done on multiple platforms including Ubuntu desktop and phone. WhatsApp is either useless in developing their app or has some sort of deal to withhold proper desktop/iPad support.

Been working on multiple platforms since the days of icq but watsapp wants it to be connected to a number for some reason.

Whatsapp is not linked to the in-device SIM.
I installed Whatsapp on iPhone with different SIM. Confirmation SMS goes to the real dumb phone. Entering code in Whatsapp and everything is running well.

Unless iStore/iTunes refuses to install Whatsapp in iPad, there should be no problems, but I can be wrong. :)

+1 Telegram. ;)
