When free isn't

The network said those who ported before the expiry of their contracts could either pay the "contract termination fee" in a lump sum, or as a monthly fee until the contract expired.

If they chose the latter, they could opt to have the use of a new number for the remaining months of the contract.

That's a pretty good offer actually.

An obvious issue with porting from a prepaid account is that you lose any remaining airtime. Which for me was R15, but I'm sure other people have lost significantly more.

The problem is that when my fiancée ported from VDC to MTN she received an SMS from VDC telling her that the port was conplete and that the contract was now over, yet she still continued to be billed. So apparently over does not mean over (so what the hell does it mean then?).

Vodacom definitely does it. They were kind enough to give me a new number when I ported my number out of Vodacom.
:D

But that goes without saying.....just wait until the contract is finished or fit the bill for the remainder.

My view is the network and service providers slipped up to interface with their accounts/cancellation department to complete the port out.

I say it's their slip up, so they fix it and foot the bill.

I even have a port out reference number and my service provider didn't close the account. I had to make numerous phone calls and the matter is still not settled.

It's a matter of them not working their process out completely--thus merely incompetence.

It could be a user friendly process.

They here to make money not friends. You the buyer beware, if you didn't ask is your problem.
