When will iBurst drop prices...?

Does anyone know when the SeaCom thing is going live? I'm thinking everyone's waiting for that before they make their announcements.

Must be an interesting choice for any ISP: do you jump up and announce your new deal first so you can get all the attention, or do you wait and see in case you can beat the competition's prices?
 
Lets say the average iburst user can download around 15 - 20gigs after cap has been reached... I would rather like to see my cap of 5gig per month change to 15 - 20gigs per month and then just cut off completely once cap has been reached. I would rather prefer to download & browse 20gigs of stuff on a fast connection than on the 64kb's.
 
Here is the body of an interesting email I received a short while ago. Sorry if this is all stale news to you guys:

"The telecoms industry in SA is a minefield of politics and greed
resulting in us, the consumers, paying for sub-par
services/infrastructure and a subsequent lack of innovation and growth
in the economy. Some interesting information:

1. Telkom only uses 40Gbps out of the a possible 290Gbps on the
SAT3/SAFE cable system for internet use; restricting availability
increases their profits
2. Neotel has a monopoly currently as sole agent of the recently landed
Seacom undersea cable; we are unlikely to see any major changes in
bandwidth offerings, costs or caps as a result of this new venture
3. Seacom will only offer 80Gbps out of a possible 1.2Tbps for internet
use, restricting availability and maximising profits
4. Cross-network cellular calls take an additional R1.12 out of your
pocket for interconnect fees ( for no apparent reason than pure greed )
5. SA is ranked 120th in the world in terms of broadband penetration -
behind Zimbabwe!

It is a well know statistic that there is a corresponding growth in a
county's economy as broadband penetration and quality increases - yet we
are being restricted in our options through negligence, incompetence and
greed. ICASA remains toothless as the incumbent regulator and appears to
be maintaining the status quo as it panders to government and big

interesting problems in the SA telecoms landscape.

I get about 8 Gig a month. It would actually be nice to use 8Gig at full speed and then get cut off.


Isn't Iburst in a good position to "ruk die internet in die bek" since they not affected with the last mile that have to go through telkom (more like Neotel).
I really think iburst can take a huge chunk out of dsl subscribers if they play their cards right.
 
Sure but then iBurst would have to accept the fact that they are competing with the 384 Kb/s segment of the DSL market..
Something which they have been unwilling to do.
Add to that their billing system..

Having read this, there's still no excuse for better prices and more caps from iburst.

I think everyone agrees that the top up prices are the real deal breakers.

R499 for 3GB is ridiculous. (Peter has mention this before)

For only "R 258"..

"do level 2 is designed for the customer who needs more data than speed, providing you with Fast DSL (up to 384kbps based on broadband technology) accompanied by 3 072 Megabytes (3GB) worth of data. *Included is 20,480 Megabytes (20GB) of local only usage."

The problem is that you can get the 15 - 20 gigs a month on the R199 p.m. package. They charge R599 for the 5 gig package. Thus costing a 15 -20 gigs per month package at full speed will be at R1 800 (599 x 3).

As far as I am concerned a hardcap is a big no-no. That will force me to move to ADSL.
 
ADSL is expensive if you are looking for small packages - eg a 40MB, because you need to pay the lines and whatnot - but if you go up in the scale ADSL gets dramatically cheaper.

now, does iBurst want 10 casual e-mail checkers, or 1 person that downloads those people's cap's in a 1 hour sitting?

Look, the packages on a comparative basis are not too badly priced, but 95c per meg for ad-hoc use after the cap is just shocking. Charging R133 to R790 per gig for booster bandwidth is just shocking. It bears no relationship to the marginal bandwidth cost. It is pure greed.

Is there any reason why iBurst can't match Neotel's 8c/MB after cap rate? After all the difference between the 10GB package and the 5GB package is R400, ie 8c per MB.

I forgot to mention that if Iburst can / will increase a 5gig package to a 15 - 20gig one with the price staying the same @ R599 pm that would be awesome :-) Guess thats asking for to much, heh heh.
