Nokia N95 software version 30.0.015 was released by Nokia on 30 Sept 2008. Four and a half months later, it is still not released by MTN. In the meantime, Nokia have released another software update - 31.0.015, on 2 Feb 2009.

What's the hold up? Or has it gone onto the back burner with all the other phone software that is being released?

Feedback, please?

Ken

Why don't you just update to version 31.0.015 using PC Suite?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but to do that I would need to change some identity number on the phone. At present, using PC Suite, I am told that no update exists for the phone even though I know Nokia have released the upgrade. In the past, it has been a couple of months before MTN have released their version of the software after Nokia have released it.

I think it is possible to change something so that PC Suite recognises the update and applies it.

If I'm wrong, please let me know how to do what you suggest?

Thanks, Ken

I think you're mistaken, to my knowledge all software updates are provided by Nokia themselves. So you're trying to tell me you can do an update from MTN's website

No, this is via PC Suite and Nokia Software Installer. And the rolling eyes are not called for.

I think it's pretty well known that cellphone companies customise phone software with their own logo's numbers, facilities etc. Certainly, my N95 has some dedicated MTN features (e.g. MTN Menu) but no branding. Some Vodacom phones have branding and have some of the phone features modified.

As I understand it, Nokia release a standard software version but some mobile providers want to check out the software and customise it. The Nokia software installer (via PC Suite) checks the serial number of the phone and, if it falls into the range supplied by one of these mobile providers who have not released 'their' version of the software back to Nokia, it reports that the upgrade is not available for that phone. This has been the case for Nokia for years, nothing strange about it.

What I want to know is when MTN are going to release this software or, alternately, how I can fool PC Suite/Nokia Software Installer into letting me have the upgrade.

Regards, Ken

IIRC, the MTN menu is stored on your SIM, not the phone.

That sounds a bit dodge, since I've always been able to update to the latest firmware (6233, N82, 6131 and E51, all on MTN) as soon as it was released.

It can be done, but I don't know how and I'd have to say that it's at own risk if you decide to do it. Are you sure that you are using the latest version of Nseries PC Suite as well as Software Updater?

Finally, do you really need the bugfixes and (possible) new features included in the latest firmware? If it only addresses minor faults, rather keep the current version.

I agree with kenironside. I think you can go the nokia site directly and get the latest firmware installed on your phone. You may need the PC suite but it simply achievable.
goes to the nokia discussion group if you want further details.

just updated my nokia n95 8 gb today to version 31.0.015 with nsu and it worked like a charm

I'm in the process of updating my firmware as well. I bought my phone on a Voda contract but I'm using an MTN sim. But my NSU says the v20 I have is up to date. After some searching, I found a way to get around this. Jump to the link to find out more. It explains what you need to know about the different codes and how it depends on which network you are on.
