Where ADSL is going in SA: capped vs uncapped

Is Vox Fat Pipe available on their Uncapped packages?

What line speed? And what package and price? What is your average monthly usage more or less?

10Mb Uncapped. No idea what my monthly usage is, but I watch 3 hours or so of iTunes/Netflix/Hulu+/HBO every day

Price?

I'm guessing you using around 220gb-250gb a month?

And at what time of the day are you consuming this data? 6pm-9pm week days and weekends?

R899 I think.

7pm-10:30pm or so weekdays. Saturday and Sunday vary

Including line rental I assume?

You could get a 25gb gig4gig account with bolt-on for R548 including line rental from VOX.

/just saying

There is this capped/uncapped hybrid thing that a lot of ISP's are doing, that makes a lot of sense.

Bolt-on is basically uncapped internet, unshaped on every protocol, after hours but that being 6pm-6am weekdays and all weekend, so in effect 108 hours out of a 168 hour week...

Way too complicated.

From my experience, no shaping. Streamed well and downloaded at line speed during the day. I just never, ever used the nighttime data so was ultimately overpriced for my purposes. Would recommend but only if you intend using most of those 1200GB too.

And then not all capped accounts are the same either. Web Africa's default capped account is shaped, you have to get the special capped account to have an unshaped account. Could not get netflix to go past 420p on their capped account during normal usage hours....

What is that exactly? Never heard of it?

Hi

All downloads (including NNTP & P2P) are shaped during normal office hours.

Only worth it if you don't stream as much, download lots, and have a fast enough line to complete most in those hours like 10mbps I reckon

It looks like they discontinued the product

Gig4Gig
This product has been discontinued. Existing users are not affected.

And their 250Gig Prioritised/Unshaped usage adsl is R780 without line rental

:wtf: To be fair, haven't used WA as my main ISP in over a year but honestly thought the capped portion was unshaped. I was happy with the performance for streaming and the odd download or whatever. It was a capped account so it was never my intention to torrent or use news servers with it (I intended downloading after hours but never did!). Http definitely flew down at line speed when I needed it though - that I remember.

Was using it on a 10Mbps line. Streaming was great but suffered a little after midnight!

If I may ask, what is? Based on your usage, it just seems like you're paying too much for something you don't actually need. Just an observation.

I value simplicity far more than a few hundred Rand
