Where ADSL is going in SA: capped vs uncapped

How about an article on the effect of Telkom's IP connect price revisions.
I suspect this is why ADSL is so bad at the moment this is a gut feel. Is this something you look at?

I think uncapped is becoming less popular, because the ISP's make it so crap. Probably because of high IP Connect pricing from Telkom.

Seems MWeb is still behind the times... everyone is moving back to capped accounts, except Mweb doesn't think so.

It's a shame the term "uncapped" has forever been tarnished because of ISP's devious practices and dodgy Terms & Conditions and bending the terminology to suit their marketing goals.

Short answer:
ADSL is going the way of the flusher in this country. FTTH is coming, and that's just one aspect.

because of ISP's devious practices and dodgy Terms & Conditions and bending the terminology to suit their marketing goals.

That is the reason why

Going nowhere slowly.

It will be many years till we see ftth replacing adsl as the mainstream product

Interesting!! I would really like to see a breakdown of sales by account size!

Uncapped in SA is largely a sad joke! Managed/shaped/throttled into the dirt!!

I would expect, with the lack of fixed line infrastructure in many parts of the country, that mobile data would be the way of the future. Wonder when we can start seeing prices lower than the current scandalous R50 per gig we currently 'enjoying'. :wtf:

On the subject of uncapped internet.

Uncapped internet = snake oil

is a useful equation to keep in mind

The sad truth. In fact, I can download more on a 200 gig capped (+afterhours) account than even an expensive uncapped business account. Plus it is a much better experience and I save myself the endless frustration of incessant shaping and throttling. The cost per gig has dropped to a level that capped gives you better value.

What is going to happen when everyone has moved over to capped accounts and no shaping are implemented?
Will ISP’s have sufficient IPC to meet the demand or will they start limiting capped accounts as well?

And then not all capped accounts are the same either. Web Africa's default capped account is shaped, you have to get the special capped account to have an unshaped account. Could not get netflix to go past 420p on their capped account during normal usage hours....

What is worse is the ISP's who think that Capped means only being able to use the account in graveyard shift. 00:00 to 06:00

Yes - that's you Crystalweb et al

As long as ISPs are run like Discovery Health, with little shareholders to appease, and Beemers and Mercs to pay for, then we will see no progress.. ever!

Capped accounts are managed too, just not to the extent of uncapped accounts..

I'm putting that picture of Keoma scumbag up on social media with a reward to anyone who punches him or something.
