The performance difference is negligible, I would go with the E6300 as it represents better value.

EDIT: Btw, are these second hand? These are pretty old models, doesn't look like you can even get them new anymore unless the supplier has old stock.

Well i own the E6300 and my brother is getting rid of his E7400 and will sell it to me for like R400 so i'm wondering if it worth it or not and if i will notice a performance difference at all

There will be some performance increase, but I'm hesitant to say it will be worth the R400.

Offer him R300 for his E7400, R400 is a bit heavy.
One major benefit of the E7400 is it'll run a lot cooler than the E6300.
There will also be a reasonable performance boost.

Go for the E7400, get a better cooler and overclock it as much as possible. Its got roughly the same kind of headroom the E8400 chips used to have.

R400 for that E7400 is way too much for that CPU now.
I paid R900 for an E8400 like 2 years ago, when the E8600 cost like R3000, and it is much better than the E7400.

If you can get that E7400 for next to nothing, then go for it - otherwise go for a quad core CPU instead.
