What is the best option?
im shopping for a new datacard/modem for my DELL D420.

1: internal HSDPA module
2: USB HSDPA modem
3:PCMCIA HSDPA Modem

whats the difference in performance between say a Novatel and a Globetrotter PCMCIA?

and between a PCMCIA and a USB e220?

etc etc....

what caused me to start checking up was when i tried to see what EDGE speeds the internal HSDPA module supports and found that the Novatel ( navatel makes the dell internal card) website shows edge / gprs at 53.6kbps?
http://www.novatelwireless.com/produ...ite/eu740.html

any input will be highly appreciated?

I've been using a Huawei E620 in a Linksys router for about a week now and I'll say that my Option Globetrotter, going strong after almost 2 years, is more solid than the E620 even though I have nothing to complain about regarding the E620.

Not your most scientific post to date...:D

I found then all to be equal stable. They all love a strong signal though....

Just go for the USB option. Primary reason being that you can use it on any PC/Laptop and thus not dependent on your specific laptop. I also have a feeling that the Modem will be useful longer than 2 years [as opposed to a laptop that tends to beg for an upgrade every 2 years] .

PCMCIA is also a tech i wouldn't rely on too much into the future, considering there's already laptops without those slots. USB on the other hand, i think there's a few years still left on that.

Everything diabolus says, upgraded my PCMCIA 3g card too the USB one about two months ago soooo much easier and maybe its just were i live but i also find it much more stable.

thanks guys...i think ill go for the usb...

now one more question:
how many types of USB modems are currently available here?

and max speeds supported?
e220 is 3.6mbps? correct or incorrect?
and others?

Modems available

Hi, I saw today the option express modem is now available, didn't have time to check max speeds yet... sorry:(. Option cards have always been my favourite (other than the original E220 usb's with the Huawei software - current one's presenting sooooo many issues, especially with vista. Hopefully will get ironed out!)

Still prefer my HSDPA option, never disconnects, works in 99,9% of computers which won't work with anything else (despite firmware upgrades, 5 different software versions, etc). Just plug in the "option" and "click, boom" - you're connected at 1.8 mbs.

The stock is harder to come by, but worth the hunt.
