Which email client/service would you recommend to a friend or family member if asked? (Outlook, Gmail, etc.)

Mail.app - no point in having "friends" using anything other than OsX - all they want is for you to fix their computers.

I used to use Incredimail which works really great but it has a real crappy Address Book but would still recommend it, especially to someone who is not computer wise.
I use Thunderbird now although you need to be a bit of a fundi to manage it.

Incredimail does not come near any of my PCs.

While your email might seem to run ok... When it goes wrong it goes BADLY wrong. I've seen this on other PCs so not prepared to risk..

So vokken moer... Incredimail should be burned with fire....

Thunderbird.
Make no mistake - it's no Outlook. BUT - and this part is why I stick with it - on a dual-boot system, you can save your profile on a drive accessible to both Windows and Linux and connect both versions of Thunderbird to the same profile.
So for me - the fact that I can seamlessly switch between Windows and Ubuntu in terms of my mail client is the deciding factor.
