I never said it was a better card ... I said they are about the same spec-wise ... aside from a 50mhz increase in the engine clockspeed ... that does not mean I said it was better.

Coz u can always just save the money, overclock his current card til u get decent DX10 cards with good prices out
 
Alright... just upgraded my system :)
I bought a 8600GT Fatal1ty Edition which arrives factory overclocked @ core=620Mhz and GDDRII mem @ 850Mhz (x2 =1700Mhz) runs very smoothly with latest nVidia drivers.. FEAR built in test gives a 85% score of frames above 44fps- with everything turned on!

Then to my surprise... with the help of nTune which is the GPU tuning software from the nVidia website, can bump up my core and mem of the card to 750Mhz and 1001Mhz (x2 = 2002Mhz) respectively, placing the card above par with the 8600GTS!! 3DMark 06 score of over 5600 points :D (About 600 more than normal)

Passive cooling, looks the shizne your bro (or you) will Love.

What cooling system do you currently have and what temp does your card now run at? How stable is it?
 
standard case cooling, 120mm fan. XFX 8600GT FE idles at 42 degress, with load 52. Passive cooling handles very well.. nTune stability tested for 3 hours without any hitches but only enable over-overclocked profile for games and tests! i use a 22 inch Widescreen @ 1680x1050 and looks great. Highly recommend this awesome value card.

Havent seen DX10 performance but thats because I couldnt be bothered with Vista.. or DX10 for that matter! lol

Nice I am thinking of going with the 8800GTS 340mb, but if I can overclock the fatal1ty then I might just get that instead and use the remainder of the money for more ram or another screen or something...
 
my logic exactly! look obviously everyone has there own needs, the 8800GTS is a great card at another level and price.. A quick check puts the 320mb card at over double the price of the Fatal1ty, but does offer much more bandwidth to that extra memory (320bit as opposed to 128bit) which is basically what you are buying. Otherwise both support for shader model 4.0, Open GL2.0, and all the bells and whistles that the lastest nVidia 8xxx cards offer, so value for money?

I would never of guessed this XFX card could over clock ontop of its factory OC- never mind by 15% running totally silent right next to me! ;)

Its either everything or nothing!
 
What are the exact overclocking specifications? Or rather, how the bloody hell did you do it? Write me a tutorial. NOW! :P
 
nVidia's 'nTune' makes it really simple to adjust the GPU core and mem frequencies.. plus the MSi K9N Ultra mobo i am using has its own 'live' performance adjusting software to use in windows so no trips into the bios really needed. i have dynamically adjusted my system for 7% extra, which means several percent more cpu fsb, the ddr2 memory bus and pci-express bus, when the components want it of course..so they run at a normal level when the pc is idle. with all this overclocking i gained a substantial score difference in 3Dmark 06, 800 points in fact.

heck right now i wouldnt bother with the 320 as its going to get outdated as fast as the rest of them, spend the spare cents on a 22+ widescreen monitor you'll thank yourself later
 
I already have one, along with a 19" TFT sitting next to it. I have contemplated buying another 22" to run two of them in dual display, but alas I realized yesterday that I would'nt have the desk space :(

Is the FSB of the motherboard limited by the CPU? So if I bought a 1333Mhz FSB motherboard upon which I stuck a Core 2 Duo E6300, would it be worth having the 1333Mhz board in the first place?

we know you didnt say it , but you implied it , by stating that the 1 card was 50Mhz faster.If you didnt imply it why did u even mention the extra 50mhz ?????

What difference does it make? 50Mhz seems a very little discrepancy to cause a flamewar.

fair enough.. i have a 19 widescreen tft too, but really enjoy the extra real estate that a 22 offers.. wouldnt need dual after all.

that 1333Mhz board, such as the MSI P35 Platinum, you gonna be buying that for improvements / support of new DDR3 memory technology and obviously the Intel 45nm Penryn quad core cpu's that are just about to be launched. pricey stuff!

sticking in a Core 2 Duo E6300 on a board like that would be rather stupid, as the silicone doesnt support 1333mhz but rather 800Mhz. simily the ddr3 memory available now doesnt have much performance gain over its ddr2 counterpart. why not wait till early next year when both intel and amd have released their new versions, gauge the market response and buy your quad core system accordingly?

i have bought a new system now with that in mind. we are light years behind the north with our 'new' technology anyways!

Don't get the 8600GT!!!

I have a 6600GT and it runs similar. Try get the 8600GTS, if you want DX10, its a better card and I know as I've seen and have a friend who has it. He can max FEAR @ 1280x1024 and get from 30fps and up.

I wasn't lying or covering up a mistake ... I just said they are the same specwise aside from a 50mhz difference. Believe me I know that 50Mhz means diddly squat in this case ... there are tons of other factors. It all boils down eventually to the benchmarks which are the easiest way to see which one is better.

But I agree, enough of the 50mhz story.
