Which graphics card?

You guys make a fuss about the memory bus width... when all you need to worry about is the actual application performance!
It's like as if you guys are trying to compare an AMD CPU running at 5GHz, when the Intel CPU is only running at 3.4GHz, and then you'll go and recommend the AMD CPU just because it has more GHz, when in fact the Intel CPU would be the better choice.

+1 to what Archer said in terms of the drivers. Previously when you tried to run Linux, Nvidia was the preferred choice in terms of drivers. Nowadays I'd prefer AMD because you can actually rotate your screen from within the AMD Control Panel, where as with NVIDIA you have to edit a config file! Secondly, some AMD cards are supported by Hackintosh :p

Howcome u wernt on the shortlist for forum member of the year:confused:

Nvidia drivers are a real schlep in some cases (like when they burn your GPU to a crisp, literally, leaving you with a nice doorstop). AMD's drivers are extremely stable and rarely have issues.

See what I did there?
Quackery. ;)

Now if someone can just post the best bargain prices.

You need to be a regular on Threadkiller to qualify.

Personally I would go for the 7950 special from Wootware, extremely good deal, haven't been able to find it at that price anywhere else.

I would advise against the 660ti.

It might be awesome now, but for example the 670 will last longer. Why? because of that memory bandwidth of 192k on the 660TI... Rather go Ati and if you must have nvidia save another month and get a decent 670. Be sure to grab one with proper cooling. The gigabyte really runs cool...

I +1 the 670 option. I waited to get the Gigabyte gtx670 wf3 and defs worth it. 660 Ti is good but you'll block your upgrading options for later on with the 192k bandwidth.

As for ATI option, I have no clue, have never went that route although I've been at the gaming thing for 15 years.

Good luck, always frustrating but fun choosing your weapon of choice.

To think back... mostly "then" you just could buy something and stick it in knowing it was good. Nowadays you need to go and study about it :D

MSI cards stay away. There issues with them about overvolting there cards and internationaly and local peeps are sending it back.
You can google they even admitted it and still says they have no issues.(wow!)

I have to second the opinion of staying away from MSI cards, My gtx 670 Power edition is in RMA for over 5 weeks until my retailer decided this week to exchange the card for a gigabyte windforce 3 670 which I gladly accepted.

thirded, i stay away from everything MSI.

Wtf..that was my post.

Well if you think you can just move the OC slider on a tuning program to the max and blame it on drivers for frying it...you going to have a bad time.

Whoa! Alot of posts :/ and I'm even more conflicted now :(

I prefer AMD/ATI cos of the memory available (3GB). Thou after hearing the horror stories about MSI...

RebelTech had the same MSI special as well.

I doubt prices for GPU's will go down in December? With our currency rate it might go up!

The strikes are over for now so the rand may actually get better.

Nvidia seem to be the better tech at the moment, check the games you want to play and see how each one performs but i would buy nvidia now.

The 7950 out performs the 660 for R500 more.
And games demand more and more memory. Skyrim with quad HD textures etc

Think I'll wait a month then purchase as I'm not in a hurry. Just currently playing WoW on my MBA 11".

I've got the exact same problem right now, go for the 660 or the 7950.

192 vs 384 bit On paper and in-game
2GB and 3GB On paper and in-game
Which one would still play most games in 3-4 years
Which company has better driver support

Horror stories about MSI? What? Where?

The past couple of months I've seen quite a few bad cases with well known brands like Corsair, Gigabyte & Asus...

I never knew Corsair make graphics cards....:erm:
