Glocks are fairly ugly (I own a Glock 19). There are many better-looking handguns out there. Having said that, they are about as reliable as any handgun can be. For me, form follows function, which in turn makes the Glock one of the prettiest handguns.
Because of how licensing works, few people can afford to make a mistake in what they choose. If you choose a crap gun, it will take about a year to get a new license. That is why the default advice is to go for CZ or Glock. Both make excellent firearms, and both have excellent support and part availability in SA. Being mechanical devices, if used enough, something will break and need replacing. And having to wait 6 months for a spare part for your good-looking , is a terrible decision.
