Which handgun do you recommend for EDC?

I lean largely toward my .357 Magnum. HP/AP rounds. You only need to fire once and the perp drops like our Rand.

Firstly, you don't need to fire once, you need to hit once.
If you're carrying that in a revolver, you only have 6 shots, and the rule of thumb from a tactical point of view is to fire in groups of 3 or more. That gives you 2 chances. Already in one-on-one SD situation that's not a lot of opportunity. But the reality in SA is that it's usually not one-on-one. If you have 3 attackers, you're out of rounds far too quickly.

If you carry a Desert Eagle (i.e. more rounds) then that's fantastic, but for those of us who aren't the size of Dwayne Johnson, it's not really an EDC option

Yep. Standing still and relaxed, shooting at a paper target that doesn't shoot back is a very far cry from a combat situation.

Never been in a dodgy situation, but I've done some sport shooting (IDPA). Even that little bit of time pressure, combined with people watching you and the range officer breathing in your neck while you try to remember the course of fire adds a lot to the challenge.

You get tunnel vision very quickly, and afterwards can't even remember what you did.

My proficiency shoot was a real sh*t show. I got one target with tight groupings (my second), but the other three had some genuine fliers. Tunnel vision and vibrating sights was so real, and that was purely caused by being placed under assessment. If I was facing bad guys shooting back? Hell, I've got a LOT of training to do.

Just another point I considered when looking at a firearm is, Striker fire (internal hammer) vs hammer fire External hammer. both setups have advantages and disadvantages.

If someone is close enough to grab the pistol, a finger can easily block the hammer from firing. I prefer internal hammer for various personal reasons.

Yeah I figured he was either a bodyguard on a special licence or into sports shooting ... but I didn't know you could buy a stock Glock on a sports shooting licence lol. I thought they needed something fancy at least. For now I'll just get my first and get good at it, which is the general theme on here. Anybody else shot the CZ P07?

You can buy an 22Lr rifle or a. 50 rifle on a sport shooting licenseIf you can motivate it and it gets approved (which might be a luckshot on the 50 but anyways) , you can own pretty much anything with a barrel bar automatic weapons.

Section 14 is mainly for semi-auto rifles.

Automatic firearms are limited to Category A collectors, and the state.

There is a quite a dramatic difference between an internal hammer, and a striker fired gun.

No hammer in involved with striker fire pistols, just a striker and a spring. You get pistols with internal hammers too (Security 9, LCP II, Walther Creed). But your normal Glocks, S&Ws and CZP10 are striker fired.

Personally I feel much safer with a striker that isn't fully pre-cocked. Can't get used to the idea of a cocked hammer in a gun while the thing is holstered and pointing at my leg.

If someone grabs an automatic pistol and pushes the slide backwards even slightly, the gun will usually not fire either, due to being out of battery.

Another thing to think about.

Which raises the whole subject of gun retention at close quarters.

Exactly. Sure you can trust a cocked and locked hammer gun, but jeepers, I can't get my head around it.
Double action or striker for me.

I would say Beretta PX4 Storm. Have one and extremely happy with it. There is also the Compact which is also nice.

Haha I watched an interesting video where a guy who knows a lot about guns (supposedly) says that all modern guns are more accurate than we are, so when people say that this gun is more accurate than that one, they actually mean they are more accurate shooting with that gun (due to grip or weight or any other tiny factors which are personal).

I think we should arrange a MyBB shooting meet in Gauteng. There seems to be enough guys in here to book a range and have some fun Then again somebody will need to screen who has beef with who ... errrrrrr ... oh wait, this is MyBB ... yeah that's not gonna work.
