Which handgun do you recommend for EDC?

I've been waiting for my card since Feb. They stopped printing around middle Feb and haven't restarted yet by all accounts.

Yep. Some non payment issue to the card printing company
 
@Foxhound5366 : not the first time. Plus the cost is so low but they just don't pay or someone siphons funds or they love to waste money losing in court. If they stopped going to court and listened to GOSA etc they would have a lot more money. But oh well.
 
So now that I'm getting closer to actually getting my first EDC pistol, I'll appreciate some practical advice from gun owners here:

1) What do you do with your carry pistol if you know you're going out somewhere that doesn't permit handguns? E.g. banks or gym.

2) How to you carry your pistol when driving? Do you keep it in a holster on your body, or do you have a second in-car holster mounted to your door or under your dashboard for easier access?

3) Is it possible to get a legal gun safe for a car in South Africa, where you could leave a pistol locked up while at the gym (for example)?

You do not ever as in never leave your gun in your car. If your car is stolen you are in a lot af trouble, nevermind all the admin you will face

That wasn't even one of the questions I asked, was it? I know car gun safes are a thing, I've seen them advertised, so presumably there's a legal use for them. Maybe just attended use.

Yes you do get. I think you get discount throught Natshoot so check on their site as I remember receiving an email with the offer.

I was also wondering about the whole "what if your car is stolen" thing. Do the SAPS just mark your gun as stolen and there's no legal liability? Or are the car safes only intended as a secure storage place while you're personally transporting the guns, so you are expected to take their contents out as soon as you arrive at your destination?

Its a legal storage facility if done by an accredited service provider. You wont get into trouble if your car is stolen but you need to be able to prove that you stored it legally, even though its a very kak idea

Well it's an interesting question: how do you prove that something you don't have anymore was where you say it was? All you'd have is proof the safe was installed, not that your gun was in it.

1.) 2 types of places. True gun free zones where you'll go to prison if you carry, like SARS, and places that just put up a sign, like a gym. For the 2nd one, just conceal.

2.)Keep your gun on your body.

3.)Yes. If it gets stolen it's the same as if stolen from your safe at home. Great for swimming at the beach, camping etc. And the crime stats actually show there's more house breakins than car theft.

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I was surprised to see the sales guys are Safari Outdoor carrying openly on their hips. I thought that's not allowed in South Africa. Or do they get an exemption as a gun shop?

You have to conceal (or cover) in public. There's debate on what constitutes 'covered' and 'public'.

Some say a holster is covered. Some say a shop owner in his own shop is not in public. But seriously, conceal. There is zero upside to open carry except comfort.

1. If you can't carry it with you, it gets locked in the safe. Banks don't have an issue, as long as you properly conceal. I've carried into banks many times. SARS usually has metal detectors, and government buildings have been declared gun free zones, so you may not carry there legally.
2. On-body holster. If you're in an accident, you won't be separated from your firearm.
3. Yes. Have a look at Pangolin safes. They fit it to your car and issue a certificate of conformance.

In my personal opinion I will always look at the 38 special snub nose. It is reliable easy to use and unlike most pistols it doesn't jam. A single action is very useful as it can be deployed fast and it packs a punch. I use hollow point as it doesn't over penetrate but will still do its job very well. Over penetration is something to consider from situation to situation but all in i think it is perfect EDC. I know one can train how to handle a jam when it comes to a pistol BUT in a high stress situation with adrenaline fear and so on the most simplest of tasks can become hard.
