Which HD Multimedia Player

you rather believe some random dude who said he has downloaded 7.5 TB of data (:erm:) than actual posts on the mede8er forum

sigh @ that

All I'm saying is that the Mede8er has played every MKV I've thrown at it. The same goes for my friends' Mede8ers, and their friends', etc. Based on this real life information, I would find said random dude's posts hard to not believe.

And let's not forget the hundreds/thousands/millions of users who too have experienced no problems with their Mede8ers.

Anyway. Enjoy the AC Ryan. Much of the same as the Mede8er, except it actually looks like it came from a Chinese factory. Oh and, God forbid you lose your remote; or yours packs up after 1 year of use.

I'm totally satisfied with my sexy Mede8er, buttons on the unit, 2 year guarantee, etc. ;)

Since it's 3x1.5TB and 3x2TB's it's closer to 10.5TB's and since I download from the same people at the same sites they tend to do me pretty well but I guess you seem to have less reliable sources.

Was interesting to read thru these comments. So mede8er plays 95% of mkv files but do still have a problem with maybe 5% of mkv files (myself have never had a problem in 2 years with any mkv files). Mede8er has got a lack of firmware support made me lol. So mede8er are beta testing based on SDK4 and AC Ryan is still on SDK3 with no beta of SDK4 yet. They are still developing SDK3 despite the complete mess that SDK3 is/was.

The one thing that is a bit bad of mede8er at this stage is that they don't want to commit on the final release of V4. What I can say is that they do tend to release decent firmwares at least. I have used a lot of media players and I still like the mede8er the best. I think ppl are trying to make a big issue out of nothing.

I've got around 6-7TB of HD content, 95% of it is MKV's - I've only had a couple not play on the mede8er. (I think 3, and they're all recent files).

this fix ran in a couple of seconds and fixed the problem (and my PC is old, see next comment):
http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/topic,3010.0.html

There was only one I had to re-encode because it was encoded with a odd resolution of 1980x1080 (which took 3 days on my old PC).

I'm actually planning on getting the new hardrive-less mede8er for my second lounge, considering all my stuff is on the network.

My only gripe with these media players is the crappy interface.

ok now this is just annoying me...

Confusion (from Latin confusĭo, -ōnis, noun of action from confundere "to pour together", also "to confuse") of a pathological degree usually refers to loss of orientation (ability to place oneself correctly in the world by time,[1] location,[1] and/or personal identity[1]) sometimes accompanied by disordered consciousness[1] and often memory (ability to correctly recall previous events or learn new material).

Why?

Out of interest, I only bought my device for HD content, I was going to get the WD one - but saw many guys having issues with MKVs on international sites, like in the comment section after NZB listtings.

I think you need to keep in mind that as you formats and technologies get released, all of these devices will have a life span that won't be able to keep up, whether its codec or hardware related - they'll eventually be replaced with a 'newer' version.

You do realize the MKV issues they are having on the WD is the exact same issue on the Mede8er. There isn't any other issue.

Please keep in mind, the AC Ryan, Mede8er and WD TV Live are all based on the same RealTek chip. In terms of capability none of them are superior to each other and the actual software uses the RealTek API. So the Mede8er is capable of what the WD TV is, and the AC Ryan is capable of what the Mede8er is, etc.

The UI and niggles are purely software, not hardware. Even the MKV issue is solved by updating the software because the chip itself works as follows:

A part of the chip is dedicated to video decoding, a part to audio decoding (similar to how modern CPUs features FPUs). Those parts are set in stone and decode the H.264, AAC, etc. and cannot be updated or changed (well technically they could augment that with the general purpose processor). Thereafter the chip also features the general purpose processor (like a computer CPU). The actual decoding of MKV container, AVI container, etc. is done by the general purpose processor, thereafter the streams are passed to the specific processor parts.

Hence the problem could be solved with a software update. All software are based on the RealTek API.

Yip - I know that - I went with the device I thought would have the best support

Ah yeah, which to me seemed at this point to be AC Ryan (looking at their forums but as we all know things can easily change). I had the exact same thought in mind. Outwardly the differences others have noted are of no consiquence to me, like mede8er having buttons on the device, I don't care about that, wouldn't mind having it either. Can't see myself using the buttons tho. Therefore my only concern is software and support.

Btw. I did check a few days ago, there are definitely firmwares available for the AC Ryan based on the v4 SDK, they are beta however.

Either way I think I'll wait for the devices based on the newer RealTek chips to surface and then buy. Don't want to buy this thing now and then have it be obsolete in 2-6 months.

Can you perhaps provide a link? I have been looking and looking and can't find it. Want to download it and test it.

@htc.If I were you I'd bite the bullet and go the Esquire special on the AC Ryan. Its almost a grand cheaper than the Mede8ter with same hardware.

A grand cheaper than the Mede8er? I thought the AC Ryan was R1200 ex, and the Mede8er R1600 ex.

Yes.the med8ter that sells for R1 600+ comes without the HDD.Now add another R500 to that and its almost R1K more.
