Which HD Multimedia Player

hmmm, maybe I will give it a go...

only thing where this would "inconvenience" me is the fact that they will be watching from my PC and apparently last time they wanted to watch I was busy downloading and so it caused stuttering for them.

but guess if it works one can always find a work around from there.

Those in the know - What is the best option available today?

I want to replace my crummy MVIX 780HD which refuses to play any of the latest formats. I want an internal hard drive and USB ports so that I can attach an external drive. I also want to be able to copy files from the external drive to the internal hard drive and be able to delete files off the internal hard drive - all without ever having to plug the media player into a PC.

What do I buy? Mede8r or WD Elements? I don't want to get burnt like I was with the MVIX - not one firmware update and the thing is basically a brick now!

I would go with either the Mede8er or the Dune. I currently have two Mede8ers and they work perfectly. However, my next one would be the Dune HD. Just because I like to change

Is it not better to just get one of those tiny little Proline micro PC's things and put VLC or whatever media playwer you want on there? This way you know you will be able to play the new codecs coming out like vp9 and h.265?

If you really want to keep up to date at not a too great cost go with the HP Microserver with XBMC, but it is labour intensive to keep it updated.

The N54L is on special for R1099 excl at Esquire

I got a HP Microserver free from a friend. Works like a charm connected to my Sony TV. Was a bit of a drama to get the drivers for the ATI chip graphics card to play nicely with Linux Mint. I just use VLC. I wonder when handbrake will start allowing ripping on VP9 codec. I am very interested to see the quality and file size reduction.

OK, so I just ordered a HP N54L microserver from Esquire and will be ordering a Roku 3 from Amazon. I'll install PLEX on the N54L and this will stream to my Roku in the lounge and my Android phone and Windows laptop.

I will then buy another Roku for the bedroom a little later once everything is setup!

EXCITED!

Has anyone got a ACRyan PlayonHD Essentials Full HD media player? I'd like to hear your experiences with it. Contemplating getting this for someone as a gift, but I've read about hard drives that aren't detected and that the menus are slow etc. I also read around on the forum and some people have issues returning stuff to Esquire when they're faulty etc.

Hey merc,

I bought myself this little unit at Makro for R999 about 2 weeks ago.

http://www.mede8ershop.co.za/MED250X/c623/index.html

I have my external and flash connected to it currently without a hitch and it has played everything so far that I have throwed at it.
It's fast, keeps a database of movies/series/pics in a small file on the drives for easier and faster bootup and I really have Zero complaints.

It's much newer than the AcRyan as well AFAIK.

Give it a shot and see what you think.

You can fit a max of up to a 2TB internal 2.5" SATA drive in it as well if you want :)

Thanks for the reply, but that's bit out of my price range :(

You won't pay much less for the Essential when including tax and delivery.

What does it amount to?

Maybe paying the extra R200 is worth it? :-)

Do they have stock of the R6A-II? PFT also have this older cheaper Egreat model listed on their website but I doubt that they can get stock. The R6A-II has a wired ethernet connection which the Essential doesn't. There should be many videos on YouTube showing the UIs on both of these devices. The HP Microserver though can do much more than a standalone media player and doesn't cost a lot more considering that it comes bundled with a 250GB hard drive.
