I use one drive 1tb comes free with office 365. I also have Google cloud, but don't use much except for my contacts/photos /phone settings, and of course the Samsung cloud duplicates this as well. Why would you even use the apple cloud if its so expensive?

For the same reasons you highlighted just in the Apple ecosystem. The free tier is enough for me to sync everything across all of my devices.

I use many different cloud storage services. They all happen to either be free or more cost effective.

Is there anyway to save to iCloud and not have the file on the device?
I can't find anyway to do that which is annoying because then I can't save space on my computer.

That was the main reason I went to the R15pm tier, you also get 1 secure video camera monitoring

I use it to sync settings and Apple apps etc but I can’t imagine what on my phone I would want to pay Apple for all eternity to back up.

When I only had a iPad the 5GB was enough to backup to iCloud but with a phone also in the mix it was too little, R15 pm is not much though and wanted to use the secure camera feature

There’s a cheaper tier than Google drive, you can add 3 custom domains and give you hide my email. No brainer.

I don't know exactly what gets backed up, I just want to be able to restore a new device from iCloud backup.
The thing where you lose your phone a 10am, buy a new phone a 10:15am and by 10:30am your phone has restored from iCloud and you unlock the phone and everything is exactly as it was, all apps with data, phone settings etc.

All the apps are in the app store and as long as things like my contacts, bookmarks, notes get transferred over, which they do, then I'm good to go. All that is well below the free 5gb limit.

You just go in Files and choose iCloud instead of device?

I'm already paying Google for 2TB of storage, so why should I pay Apple too!

What annoys me is that I could chose my cloud storage for WhatsApp on Android - I used Google Drive, but on iOS it forces you to use iCloud. Give me the option to save chats to Google Drive FFS!

I know. This is probably the only reason why I even HAVE iCloud storage.

I'm wanting to upload to iCloud from Windows desktop, could I do that via the browser?
Last I tried with iCloud installed it always wanted to also have the file in the icloud folder and in the cloud

Yeah you can just do it via the browser.

Assumed you meant MacBook when you said computer…the Windows tools are less than great.
