Hi people of broadband.

I am new to this site, so apologies if this thread has been repeated previously.

I am looking to get ADSL uncapped next month, been reading through the forum so have already eliminated the one contender thats open and on the web :D

For usage, looking at streaming Showmax, netflix (when they in SA) supersport and the odd game of company of heroes online.

The prices are all for a 4MBPS line uncapped excluding telkom. What does telkom ADSL line rental cost?

Axxess R275
Afrihost R279
Vox R289
WebAfrica R249
CybersmartR295
Mweb R239
Crystal R295 (Basic Uncapped) They also have a 2MBPS "Premium" for R349, will that be fast enough to stream?

My question, if you are streaming, not downloading, will you also get throttled? And which of these providers has the better reputation amongst people that know more about this (Which is Mostly all of you) than me.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Have a good weekend!

First of all, Welcome to MyBB! :)

I'm putting Afrihost out here. Especially after their latest network upgrade, everything is running perfectly (from what I've experienced). Otherwise Crystalweb prides themselves on their streaming ability and, from what I've seen here, they are doing well.

2Megs would be pushing it. I'd say at least 4Mbps for any reasonable streaming.

Edit: Depending on your usage, I'd also consider a capped account. They are usually unshaped and offer very good value-for-money :) Otherwise a few ISP's like Afrihost, Axxess and Crystal Web don't shape streaming on uncapped products, but P2P will suffer if you ever were to be shaped.

Your first mistake is looking at the price.

If you're looking at VOX uncapped, they good, but get an account that's double your line speed (So 4Mb/s for you) as their thresholds are low.

Your other option is CrystalWeb Premium.

Those are you only real options.

2Mb/s is fine for SD Netflix. Hulu will probably struggle though.

um im on a 2MB line at the moment, im streaming 480p/576p just fine. Now and then i can push 720p, but thats very rare to be fair though. 480p for me is perfectly fine, but ill probably upgrade my line anyway, and drop my uncapped pacakge with Telkom in favour of a caped one.

Honestly go for a capped package with uncapped from 12pm to 6am. This way you get the best speed you can out of your line plus you can download what you want by doing a basic schedule in utorrent. Everything "uncapped" is shaped or throttled in some way which will infuriate you.

Afrihost R199 for 100gigs plus uncapped from 12pm to 6am.
Crystal web R279 for 100gigs plus uncapped from 12pm to 6am.
Vox R249 for 100gigs plus uncapped from 12pm to 6am.

I like what Afrihost has done with their new products and network but I'm a bit cautious cos they have had alot of bumps to get to this point.
Vox and CW are the two stable products this year, if you want a safe bet.

"netflix (when they in SA)" Look into unotelly to get your netflix working right now in SA, its very easy to use and you get access to many websites from the U.S. where you can watch straight of the websites e.g. fox and discovery

ADSL line rental costs around R300 for a 4mb/s line.

Really don't get anything uncapped or you are going to be very disappointed with what you get e.g. downloading anything during the day at 0.25kb/s when you should be getting around 400kb/s.

+1 to getting a capped account on a 4meg line, will be a much cheaper and better alternative than uncapped. Remember you have to pay the +-R200p/m voice line rental too
