Which Linux?

oki got a small problem its got 786mb of RAM now :)
When I log into xubuntu I get a a white screen (loading cursor) and bits of the xubuntu logo flash though the white, then after a wile, I get the blank desktop and a mouse... no other GUI... if I press CAD I get a screensaver logon screen, login again, no difference, and if I press Alt-F$ I get that logout, shutdown screen, nothing changes just that blank desktop
 
Hmmm, that is odd, almost like it didn't install everything and/or configure everything properly.

Try a repair installation and see if that helps, maybe try another distro to see if you can reproduce the problem.
 
don't think I will be able to download another distro anytime soon :(

MyWorld it has started up properly before this (very slow tho) could the installation have been corrupted?
 
Stranger things have happened.

What you could also try is to delete everything in /home and log in again, this way corrupt config files will have to be recreated.
rm -r /home/[username]/*

how do I get to the terminal/console to type that in?
