Hi Guys

I have the following two PCs and need to decide whichto use as a workstation, and which to use as a media center.

PC1:
Intel D915GUX <-- keep getting page not founds from MTN on this board.
Intel 3GHz CPU
2x 512MB 533MHz DDR2 <-- The board takes 533, can anyone tell me if 4x 1GB 667MHz will work? If so, consider it to have 4Gb

PC2:
Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9
Athlon64 3200+
4x 1GB DDR400

The workstation will have an ATI X800 card.... for the occasional game

I'd ideally like to use PC2 for the Media Center, cause then it saves me buying a soundcard with SPDIF Coaxial In/Out... Anyone know how much the speed would differ between the two?

Probably not much of a speed difference, but seeing as the second already has SPDIF you may as well use it as your media PC and stick the X800 in PC1.

Personally, I'd choose the one with the best monitor for media.

Lol... <censored> :p

The Media Center connects to a crappy Mecer 37" LCD (for now).... I see a 60" HiDef in the distant distant future...

The Workstation connects to a 22" Samsung 2232GW from Sahara :p The workstation will be used mostly for SSAS, SSIS, MSSQL, VS.2005/8, and my games.... so needs as much speed as possible....

I'd say they're quite evenly matched... I don't think the Intel board supports DDR2-667 though...

Arn't DDR2 memory modules backward compatible? Not sure where I'm going to get 553s...

Yes they are, they will underclock themselves. What I meant was that it doesn't support DDR2-667 running at full speed ;)

So it'll work, just not at full speed :)

Ah...thanks. Thought so, been awhile since I purchased any hardware, think the Gigabyte MB and CPU above was my last purchase in 2005.

So you recon its a safe bet to switch the two? PC1 to workstation (with 4GB) and PC2 to Media Center?

Probably what I would've done myself, yeah :)

I think the Quad Xeon with 32GB RAM & 10X SCSI HDD's will be a bit quicker than the other pc :) :) :)

I recon I've proved that wrong once with the above AMD box running SQL 2005... it was 10x faster than a server spec'd almost like above... took them (IBM/DELL <-- can't remember which) two weeks to trace the problem the the firmware on one of the controllers.

Is memory really this cheap now?:
128X64DDR2667 MEM 1024MB, 667Mhz, DDR2, 240-Pin Memory Module R175

Me to... but I closed my account at Rectron, so Sahara it is :p

I ended up ordering it anyways, R8xx wasn't bad for 500GB....

Ordered 2x 1GB DDR Dimms as well, I figured the board already has 2x 512GB DDR Dimms, so I might as well be happy with 3GB.

Thanks for all the help.
