Which small/medium SUV?

Must be 4wd under R400k.

Choices are limited, does it have to be new?
Nissan Qashqai\X-Trail, Suzuki SX4, Subaru Forester. None of them are perfect, but I would choose Qashqai, its more of balance car, if I was going off roading I would go for Forester.

Vitara is a different segment competes with Citroen C4 Cactus, Honda HRV, etc.

Base 4x2 model of new model might start just under R400k...4x4 certainly over.

C'mon only half a mil! Are you a peasant! :D :p

:p I'm slightly disappointed in myself that over the years my priorities have shifted so much, back in the day I'd buy a badass car that I can barely afford, because I wanted it that badly. Now I'm thinking it is stupid to blow that much money on a car, even though I can afford the CX-5 I simply don't want to spend that much money.

For that matter the Grand Vitara is also below R400k (base models). I test drove one and it was also a bit underpowered. The interior also seemed very bland/basic. Test drove a Jeep Renegade before that and the interior was a lot better.

X-trail is also a nice option, very practical interior. Not sure about performance, but you can get a 4WD model in your budget.

The diesel X-trail has the same engine as the Qashqai and given that the car is physically bigger it likely feels even more underpowered. The 2.5 petrol X-trail has more oomph, but only comes with a CVT gearbox, given my disappointment in Nissan's automatic gearbox I'm quite skeptical of their CVT too. It is a potential option though.

Wife has a Honda CRV.
If you're going for the 4x4 version then it'll be the 2.4 petrol or 2.0 (I think) diesel.

She's got the 2l petrol, which is horribly underpowered due to the ****ty transmission.
If you going 4x4 though, this would be a non issue.

Other than that, it's a fantastic car. Very comfortable (not even leather seats, but the velour is lovely); excellent space; easy to park.
You will also get your money back as Hondas do have decent resale value.
It has a massive boot (580l) and also handles very nicely! I drive a BMW so I might have put it through it's paces.
Very little body roll and take bends very well for a high vehicle.
Quite honestly the only thing I can fault is the transmission/power.

Good luck!
