Which small/medium SUV?

I find the vastly opposing opinions on which cars to recommend and why on MyBB always entertaining and often informative, so here is my real world conundrum:

After a decade of driving fast sedans I lost my temper entirely when I faithfully went back to BMW yet again to look into the possibilities for my next car and saw how absolutely batshyte crazy their prices have gone. I simply refuse to drive around in a 3 series with less than 160kw of power which meant even pre-owned options started at over half a mil ...

This temper tantrum opened up many new options and eventually I settled on the idea of just getting something entirely different, such as a small/medium SUV. There's no shortage of those locally and I've test driven 4 so far: Mazda CX-5 (by far the best imo, but not worth the price), Nissan Qashqai, Toyota RAV4, VW Tiguan

I intend to test drive at least 2 more: Subaru Forester and Suzuki Vitara

Which SUV would you recommend and why? Sticking strictly to options within these, non-negotiable, parameters:
- must be 4wd
- must be German or Japanese (the reason for this is a whole different thread ;) )
- must be under R400k from the dealer

There is a new Tiguan on the way. Hold off for that one. VW arguably also has the best resell out of the bunch.

I saw it's already available elsewhere, but when will it be here? ... and will any of it's 4motion models come in anywhere close to R400k?

Will this ever see offroad conditions?

TG did a good demonstration on people buying these SUV types of cars to tow a caravan once a year and then be paying more on premiums and installments all year to drive around a slightly raised suspension version of the car with tyres that are more expensive to replace.

That would be the intention yes, besides I've never enjoyed driving any fwd vehicle for extended periods of time so if not 4wd then rwd ...

No it won't. But then you'll get the older models at a better price. Instead of buying now and instantly taking a R80k hit when the new ones launch here. Let the current owners take it hit for you! :D

The HRV is not 4WD...

Anyway, with OP's requirements I think he listed all the available options except the Subaru also mentioned here, and the Suzuki SX4. The SX4 is a bit smaller than the other options, but the top model is only R360k.

From the original list, I have only driven a rental Qashqai and it completely destroyed the image I had of it before. It was severely underpowered. Maybe it was just the entry level model the rental company bought, but I didn't like it at all.

What was your opinion of the test drives, seeing as you are used to fast sedans?

That was probably part of the problem, I expect too much from the drive. The Qashqai felt the most underpowered of them all, on paper it isn't that bad but I think the auto-gearbox it has is particularly shyte: put your foot flat and wait a good few seconds before the thing lurches forward in a very undignified fashion after making up its mind about which gear is best. The Tiguan and RAV4 were roughly equal, well built, good to drive but just bland as hell, at least they were both manual. The CX-5 was fun to drive, it had the most power and has a very well tuned automatic gearbox that let's you have some fun, it also had the most dynamic handling despite being bigger than the others.
