Which SSD

OCZ Vertex 3. Why import? IIRC, takealot.com has them now for R2100.

Wow, at R2100, defintily the Vertex 3.

If they don't have stock, get the Patriot Pyro 120GB for R2k from Wootware. It is "slower", but you'd need a benchmark to tell the difference.

EDIT: I can't see them selling for R2100. Link?

At 120GB it is pretty much the fastest SSD available now.

What do you want to spend however? There are others that are very close in terms of performance but up to R400 cheaper last I checked.

I want the fastest one :D Also dont want the issue of it slowing down in time what is that feature ? (Trim?)
Do Esquire not stock them or Rectron?

Nope. Neither IIRC.

Trim is supported by pretty much all SSDs and Windows. It is really the motherboard that is the issue. Trim is much less important in Sandforce SSDs than it was with previous SSDs. But it is just a feature that tells the SSD when a file is deleted so it can re-optimize the layout of the files for performance and life. But it constantly does that anyway, trim or not. Much more important, is that your SSD shouldn't exceed 80% space usage, if you can. And that you store your OS and applications on it rather than movies and music.

What kind of hardware do you have, currently?

Sandybridge would be better... The SATA-6G port on your motherboard is a Marvel 9128, which is a low quality SATA-6G controller.

SandyBridge comes with Intel SATA-6G ports which can actually do 6Gb.

However, it will still be a performance boost.

First however you should update the firmware on the SSD as soon as you get it. Don't use it at all until you have updated. And install the latest Marvel driver thereafter else the Marvel controller doesn't support trim.

What would be the real life difference in performance between a SATA II and SATA III Vertex 3 120GB? I see the price difference at Takealot is about R400.

Vertex 3 is always SATA3. Do you mean between Vertex and Vertex 3?

At that price I would rather take the Vertex 3, even at that price it is still faster even on a SATA2 controller.

In fact I would take the Patriot Pyro or OCZ Agility 3 on a budget, both are also SATA3 but unless you run benchmarks you won't tell the difference in performance between them and the Vertex 3.

I've been using a Samsung SSD for 3.5 years now. Runs for 12 hours a day. Not a single problem.

We've just had a Transcend SSD fail this week. Was maybe 1.5 years old. In use 8 hours a day.

You could consider the ADATA SSD's at Frontosa. Excellent speeds with the latest "safe" sandfroce controller and the price is good

hmmm R2278.86 not that much better than the OCZ

you can get the cheaper one, same chipset, slightly slower NAND for R1989.30

Which is better in your opinion?
Do you really see real world differences? Does your machine load up quicker, games load up quicker etc?

dude you cant explain how a SSD brings your PC to life. I can type on this forum the whole day long, and people will have a moan about the price when they prepared to spend R4000 on a cpu/gpu.

spend the money on a SSD, you will not regret it.

that OCZ and the Adata S511 will go head to head

the Adata S510 is a bit more pocket friendly, but comes at a cost. Slower transfer speeds for incompressible data.
