Which SSD

So what does that mean?
I see this on their site:
* SATA3 SSDs are not recommended for use in RAID 0 mode on Marvell SE9128 ports.

read this page

u dont wanna be using a SATA III SSD on that controller you have. remember I said you must hook it up to the Intel driven port?? Well you dont have one... You only have the sucky Marvel 9128 SATA III ports :(

I pointed out this fact in the beginning of the thread ;)

But I've run it on a Marvel 9128, it wasn't as good as the Intel but it was still years ahead of mechanical drives.

yeah sorry man I didnt know he had an old mobo :)

Damn thank god for the guys here almost purchased the drive and it would have been a bit of a waste :(

to be quite honest, if you knew nothing you still would have been blown out of the water. even when limited by this chipset, its light-years ahead of a spinner... You simply not letting the drive shine to its true potential :)

so it wont be a waste of money really, coz Im sure eventually you would upgrade your system.

another option you have, is spending less and get a SATA II SSD. I still have one, and it still smokes my mates PC's lol

:D

Just by the way, OCZ/Sandforce said they found the cause of the BSOD bug and fixed it. Latest firmware version apparently fixes it. Is that what you guys are talking about?

EDIT: Okay, apparently not. Anyway, marine1, when you get your drive, update its firmware before you put any data on it.

So what motherboard would you recommend to fix this problem?
Any sandybridge motherboard featuring H67/P67/Z68 chipset. Just make sure it says SATA-6GB ports.
Even a cheap Intel Bearup Lake (~R850) would be 100%

You'll need a Sandy Bridge CPU however.

As I said earlier in this thread, the Marvel 9128 will be fine. It will still be incredibly fast, I say this because I had a OCZ Vertex 3 while I still had a Marvel 9128. As long as you install the latest Marvel driver.

If you don't have the cash to upgrade, get the SSD until you can afford it or want to upgrade.

The most important feature of an SSD isn't really the raw read/write speed. It is the fact that mechanical hard-drive 7ms max latency on a read ("seek time"). SSD: 0.1ms latency

For example RAID-0 of Vertex 3's I've seen have around 1GB/s read/write speed in benchmarks which is impressive but how often do you move 1GB of data into RAM?

I just got the P8Z68-V Marine, and it is a awesome board. Nice OC tools that make it easy to OC.

Edit: O wait, sorry dunno if that will suit your chip. Might need to upgrade that as well.

I just got the P8Z68-V Marine

I've built quite a few SandyBridge systems. Mostly with Intel motherboards.

My home PC uses the P8Z68-V. It is indeed an awesome board. However Intel boards, like the cheap Intel Bearup Lake board, has a feature called fast boot. When you press the power button the OS starts loading within less than a second. It is incredible how quickly they get into OS with an SSD. Total boot time is around 3-6 seconds.

P8Z68 has about 2-3 seconds of BIOS time, then the OS which is around 2-6 seconds.

The P8Z68 has gotten quite expensive lately, when I bought mine it still cost R1800. It's just over R2k now :(

Ok so will proceed to get it and see how it runs on the Marvell :( Thanks boys you guys really know your shiiiite

dont stress dude. get the latest marvell driver, and the latest firmware for the SSD and it was KARKOFF compared to that spinner you got!!

:D

That's why I asked when you are going to upgrade. If it isn't soon, like you said, then you can just as well go with the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB. Still super fast, but a few bucks cheaper. If you are going to upgrade within the next year, get teh Vertex 3 and try it on the marvell controller. If you have problems, change it over to one of the SATA3 port and run it like that till you upgrade.

It will still be very fast. :D

Thanks guys yeah order placed, even Justin from Wootware knows of the issue with Marvell :(
He says that there was a lot of blue screens etc etc.
Will download all new drivers and firmware.

If you experience it, just change it to a SATA 3 port and you will be fine!

Edit: make sure your BIOS is set to AHCI. ;)
When changing from the SATA6 port to the SATA3, you might have to reload windows...
