Which VPS?

Our database is currently on a shared server and we've taken the decision to move to VPS. We're very new to this concept! Can anybody point us in the correct direction - ie what to look for, pitfalls to avoid and if possible recommended hosting services?
Many thanks!!

I've seen packages starting at R99pm to about R400pm - so somewhere in that region. I'd prefer local hosting simply for the reason that we're bound to need quite a lot of support initially and language is sometimes a problem!

I have a small VPS with vps.co.za (the R99 one). I haven't had any issues so far and the systems they have in place are quite good. It's not the fastest around but I didn't need to serve a lot of clients with it. Depending on your needs you could look at one of the better packages they offer: http://vps.co.za/local-vps-servers. These servers are hosted locally so you'll have good latency but you won't get the same price to bandwidth/storage ratio as international servers.

I have a few VPS's with Web Telecoms - their prices are good and service / VPS performance excellent. They also assist with moving content across which is a great help when you need to do things in a rush.

Their VPS options are at http://www.web-telecoms.co.za/vps/

John, bare in mind that managing a VPS server can be a very different experience to using shared web hosting. If you're not familiar with setting up and managing a server, you'll likely find yourself struggling big-time with a VPS. If you are familiar with managing servers, or are keen to learn, then you have less of an issue.
Take a look at our fully managed VPS servers: http://www.smartweb.co.za/vps-hosting.php. The smallest (large by most standards) package is R399/pm, but you're paying that bit extra for us to manage the server for you. If you'll be hosting a website and email on the server, I also suggest adding a control panel. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Cheers!

Hi JohnStein,

What kind of database do you plan to run, MySQL or MS SQL or something else?

Bear in mind that hosting a database can often consume a large amount of memory depending on your current load and design of your db structure. You may want to look for a VPS with at least 1Gb of RAM if you want good performance.

Hi, if this query has not yet been solved we have some great VPS Servers available.

We have small 2gb RAM VPS going for R214, We then have 4gb RAM going for R357 all hosted locally.

We have friendly staff ready to assist you with any query.

Hope this will help you out.

I love the shameless advertising in this forum :)

Yeah, this is the third thread that Mi host has advertised on, nearly the exact same message. Isn't that defined as spamming.....or the beginning of it?

We been around for a small time and now we have come to MyBroadband. We see all these other Hosters doing it.

It's how we do it that matters, and you're going about it the totally wrong way. It's strictly against forum rules. If you want to advertise, buy some advertising like everyone else has to.

No, they're offering solutions to problems when they occur. You're resurrecting 2 month old threads for a plug.

:) We all got to get in somewhere. Reminds me of those tow truck guys, who race each other like vultures to an accident.

Is that who you are comparing yourself to?
There is a clear difference between helping people finding a solution to their problems as opposed to plugging yourselves and waiting for a response

No we weren't comparing ourselves to them. At the moment were trying to get our name out. We are in the shadow of these MASSIVE companies and i honestly hadn't noticed that this was a 2 month old post, my mistake

have you made a choice yet?

I would have added RSAWeb but considering the last post...

There is always Afrihost, but everyone is bitching about Packet Loss or I/O...

I dont see any ISP with a real deployment idea when it comes to VPS or any cloud based service...

Tried google... Mostly got Afrihost and Mweb... Mweb is reletively decent I would think. I personally do not host with them but I have clients who do.

I have several clients hosting with Cybersmart, they have not complained once for the last year but one could account this due to them having direct access to the cloud admin(s) cellphones. I will have to touch base again and find out what their experiences are.

I personally call in to ISP's and ask a bunch of questions before making a choice... I would urge you to do the same, see if they are willing to brainstorm given you have a concept... what ideas can they offer... not just as value add but also to gauge over all determination to help and the intellect of the people your working with. One can easily spot a bull****ter in this industry... At the end of the day ISP's must be about its service...

Sigh... If only there was more room to move.

You can't get anything better than Digital Ocean in cheap prices.

I decided to go with Digital Ocean based on comments here.

Look, all in all a great and reliable system. The problem is its not ideal for cPanel or to resell hosting. You are limited to 1 IP address per VPS and you can not order additional IPs. This is a problem if you want to use two IP`s for nameservers for cPanel or if you have any clients that require SSL (and ergo their own IP).

So if you are only hosting one website or a small group of websites this service is wonderful.

Also, they are certainly not the cheapest. You get cheaper and nastier providers like Virpus
