To what end? the vehicle I'm looking at hasn't gone for its first service yet so there's nothing I need to "check" there - I'm just trying to figure out how this stuff works now.
 
To answer my own question about what's changed in the new models, it seems they've moved to a new DCT. Apparently the new clutch has the following (as per Gemini)

  • Improved Shift Efficiency: Gear-shift efficiency was improved by roughly 100ms.
  • Throttle Response: The delay between pressing the pedal and the car reacting (throttle response time) was reduced by 200ms, making the car feel significantly less sluggish from a standstill.
  • Enhanced Oil Charging Efficiency: The 2nd Gen unit features a redesigned oil pump and hydraulic system. By improving the speed and pressure at which the transmission fluid "charges" the clutches, the system can engage gears more decisively, reducing the "slipping" sensation often felt in the 1st Gen.
  • Better NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness): The hardware was refined to be quieter during operation. The 1st Gen was sometimes criticized for audible mechanical "clacking" during low-speed gear changes; the 2nd Gen is notably more refined in stop-and-go traffic.
  • Heat Dissipation: As a "wet-type" DCT (meaning the clutches are bathed in oil), the 2nd Gen received better thermal management. This helps prevent the transmission from overheating during heavy traffic or spirited driving—a common pain point for early dry-clutch DCTs used by competitors.

Do people still recall there is a manufacturer called Honda? Just did a quick comparison on their model comparable with the Tiggo 4, shocking how overpriced their cars are.

I don't think they are going to survive for much longer in SA.

Just drove past the maintain Honda dealership in Tygervalley this afternoon which has been there for as long as I can remember…it’s in the process of becoming a Geely dealership.

Also the first I’ve seen of those, but I’m sure it will be a great many real soon.

That entire strip is just car dealers and there is no Honda in sight anywhere.

Mine still has the book but when they didn’t bother to stamp it I figured they forgot but then said no it’s all captured online the moment they start working on the car.
 
Did you consider the MG ZS (nee Pro)?

You're open to Chinese already, I've seen a fair number on the road already & all these MG's (ICE & EV) are shifting serious volume in the UK.

N/A engine & 4 speed auto are the major cons though.

It's weird because they are a rip off on some models, but offer incredible value on others like the Civic RS...
 
The Mahindras also come with premium Harman Kardon systems on the highest spec of each model, which you don't even get as standard from the premium brands costing over R1m+.

If you're buying a car for looks then you wouldn't be considering any of these cars mentioned on this thread...
I am pretty sure the "upgraded" HK sound system sounds great,,,,,, over stock. I personally feel they slap a badge on anything to make it "premium" way too easily these days. You will find they are just rebranded stuff coming from the same factory.

My B&O system that came with the Raptor is rebanded Fomoco stuff. They take us for fools


The guys who have a used Tiggo Cross are closed for the holiday, and Cherry dealer only had a hybrid so no test drive for me today. I am however still strongly leaning towards the Jolion.

I bought both the Fronx and a Jou-Lion in the last year, albeit not for myself.

I did not test drive either one.

But the interior of the Jolion City Plus is a much nicer place to be than the Fronx.

If it comes with a sub and amp, which it does, it's already a massive upgrade on the stock system...

I have driven a T-Cross DSG. Very nice drive, but very bland and expensive
Fronx and Grand Vitara are nice, but that engine is so underpowered. Very reliable and economic on the other hand
Looking to drive a Tiggo 4 Pro Elite and Haval soon

I live on a mountain outside Piketberg, so don't even want to think about the fuel consumption with these last two Chinese models

I didn't drive the T-Cross or Grand Vitara. The Fronx is decent, but I'm coming from a 2l turbo so I felt the lack of oemph. The Haval is really nice and I just feel, especially buying second hand, you get to very much more for you money than with the legacy brands.
 
How long do you want to keep the car for and do you care about resale value?

The Toyota and Suzukis are basic and boring but they will be fine for decades.

The cars with gizmos will eventually write itself off when something breaks.

Everything seems to have their drawbacks

Fronx/Starlet Cross and Grand Vitara/Urban Cruiser - Decent tech, noisy underpowered engine. 4 Speed auto
T-Cross - Overpriced, but better build quality then above
Chery and Haval - Very well equipped, but terrible fuel consumption and maybe shortage of parts.
Mazda - Very basic
Corolla Cross - Will have to be a 2021 with 80k + km on the clock to get close to R300k

Good summary. You can add questionable safety to Fronx, and questionable resale value to Chery/Haval
