For anyone looking for that young Islay fix, but unhappy to pay R650 for Ardbeg/Laphroaig 10, this stuff is IMO fantastic value.

How does this compare to Rock Oyster? For me the Rock Oyster did not deliver on all the "blended Islay" promises with pretty much the same flavour descriptions. The medicinal, sticking plaster flavours seem to overpower these Islay blends, giving it a kind of acidic "tequila" flavour.

So that blend seems like a bargain at the price, but I'm very hesitant.

I am very new to whisky, but the suggestion on this forum to try ardbeg 10 made me really fall in love with it. Since then I've had lagavulin 16, laphroaig 10 and some ardbeg uigeadail as well. Out of all those the ardbeg 10 and probably the uigeadail are still my favourite.

That being said, I can't really afford R1000 on a regular drinker, and R700 is still pretty steep for the 10. I haven't tried rock oyster so I can't speak of it, but at R350 a bottle, the clan denny is a great way for me to get that fix more regularly. 2 bottles of clan denny for cheaper than one of ardbeg 10 is a win for me.

if you try it and don't like, I'll buy it from you:)

Thanks for the heads up, going to be in Holland next week will see if I can find some there.

I brought a bottle of the Highland Black home yesterday, sampled it with wife last night, nearly half the bottle gone already. Should have picked up a few more :p They also have a blended malt called 'Hogwash' which is aiming to be a Monkey Shoulder copy at about half the price, also very nice if you are a fan of MS.

Oh, and their 'Oliver Cromwell' gin just won similar plaudits last week. Stores in the UK were sold out of it for a while when the news appeared on BBC about winning a similar taste test thing against gin s3 or 4 times the price (Aldi under 10gbp) but you should get it now. I grabbed a bottle on Monday and they had lots of stock.

Did you pick yours up in the UK? Doesn't seem to be available in Holland.

I did, yes. I'd be surprised it's not in Holland though, Aldi is right across Europe. Unless there is a law in Holland similar to SA which stops supermarkets selling hard booze. No such law in UK thankfully.

Good luck, hopefully they have it in store though.

Try the Three Ships 5 year old, much prefer that to the Clan Denny. And cheaper.

I love the 3 Ships 5 as well. Always keep a bottle in the house. It lacks that salty, briny goodness that Ardbeg and Clan denny give me though.

The price is fantastic! Great whisky for under R200.

So if anyone has ever wondered about ordering whisky from overseas, turns out it's not that bad. You are allowed to bring in a certain amount of spirits for personal consumption. Duties are calculated on ABV and volume, plus they slap VAT on top.

Some tips and experiences when ordering from Laphroaig:
1) Pay using paypal
2) They used DHL to send the package. Tubes were inside heavy duty tube shaped bubble wrap and boxed. Really sturdy.
3) They never sent me a tracking number, so you have to mail them and ask
4) If you have decent spam filtering check your spam folder for correspondence because their SPF doesn't match their sending server.
5) Package got stuck in customs because there was no itemized invoice included. Customs wants a line item of each bottle showing ABV and cost. Laphroaig eventually sent me this in email.
6) DHL customs can be pretty slack, so make sure you follow-up after paying duties and their processing fee.
7) I wanted to change my shipping address from home to work, despite jumping through the required hoops and filling in the forms they still delivered to my home address, so don't bother if you ever consider change of destination.

Edit: Details on importing for personal consumption: http://www.gov.za/services/import-liquor/import-exemption-liquor

Great information, thanks. May I ask what you ended up paying for each in total? PM me of course if you don't want to mention pricing here.
