Great information, thanks. May I ask what you ended up paying for each in total? PM me of course if you don't want to mention pricing here.

PMed

I will of course buy this, but hope it's better than the Kelpie, which for me, was a bit of a let down. The Corryvreckan, on the other hand, WAS a revelation.

I quite liked the Kelkpie, but I suppose the trick is always what else can you get that's better at that asking price.

So if anyone has ever wondered about ordering whisky from overseas, turns out it's not that bad. You are allowed to bring in a certain amount of spirits for personal consumption. Duties are calculated on ABV and volume, plus they slap VAT on top.

Some tips and experiences when ordering from Laphroaig:
1) Pay using paypal
2) They used DHL to send the package. Tubes were inside heavy duty tube shaped bubble wrap and boxed. Really sturdy.
3) They never sent me a tracking number, so you have to mail them and ask
4) If you have decent spam filtering check your spam folder for correspondence because their SPF doesn't match their sending server.
5) Package got stuck in customs because there was no itemized invoice included. Customs wants a line item of each bottle showing ABV and cost. Laphroaig eventually sent me this in email.
6) DHL customs can be pretty slack, so make sure you follow-up after paying duties and their processing fee.
7) I wanted to change my shipping address from home to work, despite jumping through the required hoops and filling in the forms they still delivered to my home address, so don't bother if you ever consider change of destination.

Edit: Details on importing for personal consumption: http://www.gov.za/services/import-liquor/import-exemption-liquor

So is it that much cheaper to be worth that effort and frustration?

I haven't tried the Kelpie as yet but I've tried The Corryvreckan, The Dark Cove and The Perpetuum. The Corryvreckan would be my third choice. I didn't like The Dark Cove when the bottle was first opened but it was much better after the bottle had passed half way. I find the Ardbegs are enjoyed much more if it gets about 30 minutes to breathe.

So what you are saying is that you drank half a bottle of Ardbeg in 30 minutes......

Suggestions for a birthday gift. Budget R1000 - R1200.

Likes Glenmorangie 10 year and Dalwhinnie 15 year old.

Oban, also quite light like the 2 mentioned above, slightly salty so it pairs quite nicely with sushi/ salmon ceviche.

Ardbeg Uigedial also a great whisky if you're looking for something peated.

You're quite spoilt for choice in that price range. Another great option, a bit more robust though, Benriach 15 year old PX Cask.

What about something from glenfarclas or Aberlour? Glenfiddich Project XX might also work.

I think Oban is a great "cross-over" Whisky from something like Glenmorangie to an Arbeg or Lagavulin.

I bought a bottle of Boplaas whisky over the weekend. Opened the bottle just now and let me just say this was this first time that I have thrown a glass of whisky down the drain holy hell that was bad.

Have no idea what Im going to do with the rest of the bottle, perhaps light the braai or clean the drains

I nearly bought a bottle a while back and thought I am not going to pay that much.

School fees. Share it with others so they don't waste their money. Maybe you can trade drams with other people.

I'd file it under "local novelty". I think the issue is the finish in brandy barrels overpowering the whisky. I've gotten used to it after having it a few times. Also seems to improve once you get about half way and it's had some breathing time in the bottle.

But yeah. Bring it out as a novelty item when you have friends around.
