From the marketing blurb:

An evening of Scotch single malts from the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay, presented by South African brand ambassador, Caitlin Hill. Bruichladdich produce three different types of spirits, including the peated Port Charlotte, and the ridiculously peated Octomore.

Whiskies:
Bruichladdich Classic Laddie
Port Charlotte Scottish Barley
Octomore 7.1
Octomore 8.1
TBC (Something exciting!)

Caitlin is fun. I've been to one of her tastings and she was at wade bales in Cape town.

It's kind of disappointing, at least a lot of places online are doing really good specials of Rock Oyster but I have other desires at the moment and shipping almost makes it almost not worth it. :|

There's still a very small chance checkers will do their 20% off single malts for the weekend...If that happens there are a few I'd consider.

Just remember on Saturday P&P normally does about 25% off all there whisky if you buy two bottles. Even the ones on special, that's when there's bargains are to be had.

They're already advertising 25% off if you order 2x bottles online on Saturday.

Thanks, checked the online stuff and there's some good deals based on the 25% off. Will probably raid a few stores close to me as well.

So I attended a Bruichladdich tasting on Tuesday evening hosted by the SA brand ambassador.

We had the following (in order):
1. The Classic Laddie
2. The Laddie Valinch
3. Port Charlotte Scottish Barley
4. Ocomore 6.1
5. Octomore 7.1

My notes:
1. I haven't had this for quite a while (as I'm not into unpeated Islay's) and was surprised at how good it actually is. It's bottled at 50% and with my first sip, I was hit with alcohol heat. On the second sip that has dissipated with sweet, salty notes, oak and there's a certain barley note that comes through here quite pronounced which seems to run through all Bruichladdichs, in varying intensity. Medium finish. Lovely dram but I'm not worth R1000 a bottle to me.

2. Background: this one is a distillery exclusive that is bottled and given to brand ambassadors on the annual brand ammbasador conference. About 300 bottles of 500ml each are produced. Excess is sold in the distillery shop only. Single cask, 10yo sherry hogshead bottled at 59.6%. An absolute sherry bomb that did well with the addition of a few drops of water. I have to be in the mood for sherried whisky. I was not really in the mood on Tuesday and hence this was my least favouite. Make no mistake, a brilliant whisky, just not to my pallette on the night.

And onto the peat...

3. Classic Bruichladdie - this is one of the reasons I love Islay malts. Less sweet than Ardbeg 10, more briney, lots of smokey peat, quite spicy, underlying barley. Another medium finish, longer than classic laddie, vanilla and sea salt linger.

4 & 5 - This became a battle of 2 very good Octomores. The 7.1 being more peated than the 6.1 (something like 250 PPM on the 7.1 vs 169 on the 6.1 - IIRC (or google if you want the exact figures)). Both are incredible but 7.1 was the standout for me and my fave of the evening. Punchier, livelier, mouth filling, Octomore deliciousness.

Yesterday I managed to find what seems to be the only 7.1 for sale in SA and it's now with the courier on it's way to me (thanks, NGF). I saw two 6.1's for sale around R2k each (NGF & WaW) with all the other Octomores available from the likes of Bottega, WB, Bottleshop > R3k.

On the night I also tried the following (I had a driver take me home):
Kilchoman 100% Islay (must get me a bottle of this)
Glenmorangie Milsean
Glenmrangie Allta
Springbank 10yo (must get me a bottle of this)

TL;DR - went to whisky tasting, drank lots of delicious whisky, went home.
