So I attended a Bruichladdich tasting on Tuesday evening hosted by the SA brand ambassador.

We had the following (in order):
1. The Classic Laddie
2. The Laddie Valinch
3. Port Charlotte Scottish Barley
4. Ocomore 6.1
5. Octomore 7.1

TL;DR - went to whisky tasting, drank lots of delicious whisky, went home.

Mmmm that Laddie Valinch sounds lovely.

I really love the Octomore, but damn that price point.

Kilchoman make some really good stuff. Between them and Wolfburn there are some interesting things going on.

I tried the new peat monster at Wade Bales and it's really good! Laphroaig certainly represents well. Should be right up your alley.

1. The Classic Laddie
My notes:
1. I haven't had this for quite a while (as I'm not into unpeated Islay's) and was surprised at how good it actually is. It's bottled at 50% and with my first sip, I was hit with alcohol heat. On the second sip that has dissipated with sweet, salty notes, oak and there's a certain barley note that comes through here quite pronounced which seems to run through all Bruichladdichs, in varying intensity. Medium finish. Lovely dram but I'm not worth R1000 a bottle to me.

R709 for the gift set: https://www.takealot.com/bruichladdich-the-classic-laddie-2-glasses-750ml/PLID42975309

As a fellow peathead, I would like to mention, and highly recommend, a possibly lesser known Whisky from Campbeltown: The Longrow range from the Springbank Distillery.

I have had the good fortune of owning...and finishing, a bottle of their Longrow 18yo Limited Edition.
One of the best peated Whiskies I have ever had, but unfortunately too expensive for me to buy another one.

I am considering trying the NA expression at a 3rd of the price, but am worried I'll come away disappointed.

I tasted the NAS at Wade Bales and I really liked it. I will buy a bottle at some stage. I'm sure you could find it to taste at Bascule Bar.

You won't be disappointed at the NAS. I bought a bottle on the advice of one of the guys at WhiskyBrother. Was around R700 at the time. Lovely stuff, indeed and worth it at the price.

Hey guys, so I have recently dipped my toes in the Whisky world have really not tried much. I have a bottle of grants for the hot toddies and monkey shoulder which I do like a bit. I recently tried the Lagavulin 16 yr because of parks and rec and never thought a whisky could taste that amazing (Drank neat with a few drops of still water)! Now as I said I pretty much have no experience. BUT. Is there an alternative to the Laguvalin at a cheaper price. Smoky campfire in my mouth is what I'm going for. Be gently with the whsiky novice please :)

What budget you looking at here?

Look lagavulin is around R1400 a bottle. Something cheaper? :)

Is there anything in the R500-R1000 range?

I'm sure the rest of the peeps that have been doing this for longer can add their recommendations, in that range I'd suggest the Ardbeg 10, goes for around R700.

Laphroaig Select is also great for the price usually between R300 - R400.
