So I attended a Bruichladdich tasting on Tuesday evening hosted by the SA brand ambassador.
We had the following (in order):
1. The Classic Laddie
2. The Laddie Valinch
3. Port Charlotte Scottish Barley
4. Ocomore 6.1
5. Octomore 7.1
TL;DR - went to whisky tasting, drank lots of delicious whisky, went home.
1. The Classic Laddie
My notes:
1. I haven't had this for quite a while (as I'm not into unpeated Islay's) and was surprised at how good it actually is. It's bottled at 50% and with my first sip, I was hit with alcohol heat. On the second sip that has dissipated with sweet, salty notes, oak and there's a certain barley note that comes through here quite pronounced which seems to run through all Bruichladdichs, in varying intensity. Medium finish. Lovely dram but I'm not worth R1000 a bottle to me.
What manner of thing has happened to the title?
Always bugged me that the op used the Irish spelling. This at least straddles Scottish, Irish, American and all the other outliers that don't follow SWA rules.
Unfortunately the usual commercial schite...Shoprite also jumped onto the bandwagon this year

As a fellow peathead, I would like to mention, and highly recommend, a possibly lesser known Whisky from Campbeltown: The Longrow range from the Springbank Distillery.
I have had the good fortune of owning...and finishing, a bottle of their Longrow 18yo Limited Edition.
One of the best peated Whiskies I have ever had, but unfortunately too expensive for me to buy another one.
I am considering trying the NA expression at a 3rd of the price, but am worried I'll come away disappointed.

Now that IS a special....wow, great deal.
I never shop there.Been at that price for at least a month.
I tasted the NAS at Wade Bales and I really liked it. I will buy a bottle at some stage. I'm sure you could find it to taste at Bascule Bar.

Hey guys, so I have recently dipped my toes in the Whisky world have really not tried much. I have a bottle of grants for the hot toddies and monkey shoulder which I do like a bit. I recently tried the Lagavulin 16 yr because of parks and rec and never thought a whisky could taste that amazing (Drank neat with a few drops of still water)! Now as I said I pretty much have no experience. BUT. Is there an alternative to the Laguvalin at a cheaper price. Smoky campfire in my mouth is what I'm going for. Be gently with the whsiky novice please![]()
Look lagavulin is around R1400 a bottle. Something cheaper? What budget you looking at here?

Is there anything in the R500-R1000 range?
