Jameson Select with a personalised label and shipping won't be R500, unfortunately. I'd expect at least double that.

If he loves Jameson, it means he's a sweeter/lighter whisky drinking, and you can look at any of those expressions. Doesn't have to be Irish, can also look at your Speyside/Highland whiskies from Scotland or the unpeated Japanese offerings, although those are expensive.
OP received a personalized bottle of Jameson...we do not know what kind of Whisky the BIL likes.

OP should ask him what he likes...then tell us, so that we can make some recommendations within OP's budget.

Yeah I was just going on what he said he wanted to get - which is Jameson. Getting BIL's fav is obviously the best bet here :D

My local Checkers has the Three Ships 8 year old Oloroso Finish on special today. Use the orange card thing and get 25% off, so R750 down to R562. I grabbed one, but am thinking I should go back for another couple.

Care to share which Checkers?

Thanks.
Can you recommend any Speyside/Highland Whiskies?

I normally see him have Jameson or Monkey Shoulder.
As I mentioned, he likes whiskey but is not a connoisseur so he will be willing to try something new

Yes. It took just 2 minutes to get the Orange card at the Moneymarket kiosk.

Haha, I forgot mine and went and got a new one as well. I also got 25% off a bottle of Moet for my wife's birthday on Sunday, so all in all it was a good visit :p

I guess but you know the saying, a gift is something the person wouldn't normally buy for themselves.

Also, he is open to trying a new one so i dont want to buy a dud whiskey

I wasn't a big peat guy when I started off with whiskies. It was overwhelming for me. I've grown into it a few years ago though and now I can't get enough. Yes, peated whiskies are, for the most part, more expensive than other expressions. I've been trying to taste a bunch of options whenever I can, and I keep coming back to Ardbeg 10 as the "benchmark". It's not cheap, but it's just the best value for money and I think it's daft to not have a bottle in your pantry if you like peat. As simple as that.
I think I was just lucky.

20 years ago a friend bought me a bottle of Laphroaig 10yo for a B'day gift. I don't know why he chose it, because he is not a big peat or even Whisky guy.

I think he bought it based on his budget and the bottle looked expensive etc.

So my introduction to the world of Whisky was Laphroaig 10 yo...and I loved it from the first whiff and taste.

The rest is history...
Im still struggling with peat but not against it. Can you guys recommend the best dram to start off with, say perhaps something to start, then the next step from there on out?

I dont want to buy a bottle then its a bit too much and it just stands in the cupboard. I wanted to buy an Ardbeg from Makro the other day but left it due to the above reason.

There are some nice Jameson "Caskmate" gift boxes in Checkers which would make a nice gift. Caskmates is Jameson finished in a beer cask and offer a different twist on the traditional stuff. So it tastes different to the normal Jameson so he will be trying a new one from a brand that he likes at under R500.

I'm not going to bombard you with options.....Glen Grant 10 or 12, I prefer the 10. Can be had neat and also takes well to water(like Monkey Shoulder), I haven't had it with ice but should go down well with ice. Nice Speyside whisky, easy drinking, fruity and sweet.
