Tried a couple other whiskies over holiday.
Balvenie 12y old doublewood............really great. Loved it. Woody, honey flavours
Glenfiddich 12y old.....Was good. No smokiness at all. Sweet.
JW Double Black..... A Stronger black label. More smoke. Nice for a evening sip

Having the Laphroaig Quarter Cask and I'm loving it. It is extremely peaty and flavourful...very very strong whiskey but it's amazing.

Stark contrast to the Bunnabhain 18yr I had a few days ago...so much smoother and more naturally nutty.

Quite a while back, we covered the crossover trend of aging whisky with beer influences and beer with whisky influences. Jameson has taken the experiment a step further. Dubbed a “beer-inspired whiskey,” Caskmates is the result of a collaboration with the Cork-based microbrewery Franciscan Well -- reportedly over a few drinks in 2013.

The initial plan was to age Irish stout in ex-whisky barrels. After the beer aged, the “stout seasoned” barrels were filled with Jameson Original whiskey that had already aged about four years, the influences of the beer creating a new expression. It’s your favorite Irish whisky, but now with a bit more complexity. The pleasingly aromatic dram is rich with notes of fruit, chocolate, vanilla and banana. On the mouth it feels just a bit rounder -- still with that Irish whisky sweetness -- and with overtones of additional oak, dried fruit and a hint of toffee-bread.

I was fortunate enough to taste Ardbeg 10 yr old single malt recently.
What an amazing whiskey. Heaps of peat and smoke, yet not overwhelming.
A dash of water brought out more aromas.

Also tasted JW gold label for the first time. Better than Blue label IMO.

Looking for some advice. What can I get someone as a birthday present who's drink of choice (everyday splash) is JW Black? He used to enjoy JW Green back in the day. I don't drink JW, so not sure what would be a good substitute.
