Bains tastes like bourbon to me. There is something artificial in there that creates a very overpowering smokey bourbon flavor.

Can anyone recommend a Highland Scotch please? I'd like a single malt but Highlands as opposed to Islay, so no heavily peted whisky, also not too sweet please. I'd like to be able to have more than one in an evening.

Around R500 for 750ml budget.

Bourbon had to be 51% corn and Bains is a grain whisky and seems like corn is a big portion of the grain used. Bains is probably matured in bourbon barrels so I can see the similarity. As far as the smokiness goes, I've been drinking to to much Islay to pick up light smokiness.

Thanks for this, I already have my usual stock: Glenfiddich 12 and Johnnie Walker Back Label but I want to add another.

The Whisky Exchange reports notes of toffee and honeysuckle on the Glenviet, that might be a bit much for me.

I have had the normal Singleton, how does the Tailfire differ?

The Glenlivet is a very lightly flavoured whisky so I doubt it will be too much,

I've never had the normal Singleton so I can't compare unfortunately.

I had some of the tailfire yesterday and its a bit more spicy, or a bit more "bite" than the normal one.

Which singleton are you referring to above?

I've been trying the Dufftown 12yr old, the Glen Ord 12yr old, 18yr old and 25yr old this week.

Has anyone here tried Jim Beam's Devil's Cut?

Just got back from an aficionados bourbon tasting. Devils cut was in the mix but thought the Jim beam black was a tad better. Makers mark and Knob Creek were really nice.

I really like the Knob Creek as well. Those 2 bourbons are slightly higher Rye content in the recipe, you should try out the Wild Turkey.

I'm busy enjoying Wild Turkey. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

Try and find a bottle of the Wild Turkey 101 or Wild Turkey rare breed, just a little more kick than the ones available right now.

Hello learned folk,

I see the 'new' Black Bottle on special at Checkers Liquor for R200.
Is that a good price? And what can I expect from it.
I understand it is not as peaty as they used to make it.

For a willing newbie, would this be a worthy experience?

Thanks in advance.

I paid about R290 iirc and I enjoyed it. So good price.

I never tried the old blend so cannot compare I'm afraid, but it was a decent drop none the less.

Very good price. Worth rolling the dice on it.
