Anyone care to comment on Springbank 12yo?

There's 2 versions, the standard and the cask strength. I absolutely love the Cask strength but I haven't tasted the standard offering. There's only 3 distilleries in Cambelltown and their whiskies are noticeably different.

Seems the Springbank 12yo is out of stock everywhere. Will shop around for it! Getting a bottle of Caol Ila 12yo for free tomorrow. Guy giving it to me tells me it tastes terrible but I really want try a peat heavier whisky. Quite curious as to why he dissed it so much.

Some stock of the cask strength https://www.aficionados.co.za

The one at Aficionados is the Burgundy Cask. The normal 12 year old Cask Strength is different, see the bottle in the pic.

I got that bottle of Caol Ila today. It is definitely different from what I usually drink, but I like it. Initially the smell was a bit overwhelming, but now I can't stop taking whiffs of it. I like that it's almost oily. The glow from a sip is also quite pronounced. I'm going to take my time with this one and then make up my mind on whether it's a firm yay or a reluctant nay.

Call Ila is a good start into Islay Whisky. Keep an open mind though, your tastes evolve over time. Try some Ardbrg Uigedail if you enjoy the peat.

Sounds like you're well on your way to peat nirvana

Just got that Cardhu as a birthday gift from SO along with a Jura Origin...getting into it slowly but it's a nice easy drink

Passed through Dullstroom and had to stop by *Wild About Whiskey* for some tastings below

Really loved the Bruichladdich selection (sweet and peat). Also really enjoyed the Kavalan (Taiwan) and the Nikka (Japan)

No comments on the Octomore, that would be my favorite of the lot.

That's a really nice lineup except for the Founders reserve, can't stand that stuff. It really drags down the Glenlivet brand. The Nadurra is quite a treat though, quite a high ABV.

Up to the tamdhu so far which I really enjoyed. Pairing with it was pork belly with a mango and white Rock cheese with a touch of mint. Worked really well.

That's quite a creative dish, kudos to the person who thought up the pairing. The the sherry influence of the Tamdhu goes so well with those flavours.

What's the rest of the menu like?

Glenlivet 12 was nice and easy. Paired with date filled with fig and wrapped in bacon. Also had a small slice of Scottish mature cheddar on the side which brought out the oak really nicely.

Nadurra was really good. Simple duck pate pairing which helped tone the high ABV down a tad.

Preferred the Black Art 1990 to Octamore... strangely ebough. Felt the Octa was a more powerful Laphroaig? Or maybe I was already toasted by the time I got to it :)
