Once. Not again, thank you. As a tip - most whiskies they recommend you store in the freezer won't be good drinking. The severe cold kills most of the flavour in the whisky. If they recommend you cool it down to kill some of the flavour, it's usually because it's not a good whisky. In my books, R379 for something like that is overpriced, yes. For that same money you can get something like Glen Grant Major's Reserve. A little bit more and you can get a bottle of Glenfiddich 12YO.

Well, I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who preferred drinking bad whisky :p

But it's all subjective surely and my experience of it is, it's very nice. and I make no apologies for it. I have no idea about putting it in the freezer, for me it came straight out of the bottle and went down with nothing added.

My wife liked it too. We've been in whisky clubs and visited distilleries in Scotland and like to think we know a good whisky, but I have no reservations about saying what I like or what I don't judged on one thing. My taste buds. Not as people who have a preference for one distillery or only single malts, but as a couple of people who taste and drink a lot of different types.

So to me, as someone who drinks whisky every day, I don't mind hovering around the lower prices for an everyday dram. I like VAT 69 on a Tuesday night and a Glenfiddich 15 year old Solera Reserve or a Port Charlotte on a Saturday. There is no prejudice.

I'm sure we can agree on a lot of things when it comes to what we enjoy or not. I really dislike Red Label too for example, but Black Label is right up my street. I like it a lot and I'm not going to not drink and try others in the JW range because RL is rotten.

I prefer the WW over the Glenfiddich 12, but would take the Majors Reserve over both of them.
 
I want to say "you're crazy", but my last Glenfiddich 12 was also pretty "meh". They change a lot with time, from time to time, so I think I'll give them a year or two and then try again. No two batches ever taste the same with single malts, so that's nice.

I really like JW Green and love the JW Island Green, so I wasn't dissing JW...but rather their pandering and crap WW.

I haven't had for a while but it's always been so middle of the road that I'm not inclined to buy a bottle.

Never tried either. I got a Platinum for a birthday a couple of years ago and that was Red Label level bad. I'll pick up an Island Green duty free next month and give it a bash.

I'm the same as you. My everyday drams bounce between Three Ships 5, Bains, Label 5, Auchentoshan American Oak. I like certain JW's like Double Black. I don't like the normal Black as I find it too full of E150.

Weekends I dip into the expensive stuff.

And I still consider myself a whisky snob.

Haha, nice one. But you need to add the VAT 69 into that line up. My wife often gives it as a freebie to people at her restaurant without telling them what it is, and they all like it. I still can't believe the local price.Have never tried the double black, need to line that one up soon.

Ah, good ol'VAT 69. I've had plenty in my time. Every so often I buy a bottle when its on special - as I'm sure yo know, sometimes < R100 :sneaky:

I read an article once about Scotch whisky which are considered as pillars of he Scotch world and good old stalwarts. The list included the likes of Teachers, Black & White, Bells, label 5 and VAT 69. The article further went on to say that typically, if a cheaper Scotch is in a dark coloured bottle, then that whisky is unlikely to have colouring (E150) such as VAT 69 and therefore is not using anything to mask the flavour. This means the whisky won't be a caramel bomb (like JW Black) and is a better quality Scotch at the lower end of the market.

The article's from 2016 and it states the price at almost £20. We're quite fortunate to not be taxed as high as the UK.

Yep. Over there, VAT 69 sits at the same price point as Bells and Famous Grouse etc. We really get it super cheap.

What does that even mean? That list makes no sense at all to be honest and is based on what data?

So the fact that VAT 69 is #10 on that list, really means fukall and isn't an accolade at all, I'm sorry to say.


We obviously all have different tastes and preferences. I'm lucky that I do not drink a lot of Whisky or every day, so I don't need a "value Whisky" that "tastes good for the price".

Then I rather don't drink at all to be honest.

Now I'm sure feathers will be ruffled by my comments, but this is just my opinion of course.

Not at all. We all have different tastes, needs and opinion. But I drink whisky every day because I want to. If price was no object, then no doubt my regular dop would be different, but it does come into it so I choose accordingly. And I’m perfectly happy to find great tasing whiskies at a lower price.

You seem to be conflating good whisky with lots of money. I don’t think that’s the case. There are lots of options and I’m a confirmed bargain hunter so I scout about a lot. And also because not drinking whisky at all is not an option for me. I’m Scottish and whisky is part of my culture.

I bought a bottle of VAT69 after reading the article, poured a dram and the rest has been sitting there for more than 2 years.

I try to stay away from opinions when it comes to whisky, I'd rather figure things out myself therefore I attend a lot of tastings. I sometimes make suggestions and hopefully I've helped someone find something different or open up a discussion. If someone's feathers gets ruffled then they should try a teaspoon of cement with their next Whisky.

I have never heard or seen label 5 in South Africa. Which places sell it normally?
