I don't imagine anyone truly wants to pay around R2k for a bottle of "bland" though
And that's exactly this. I've converted a bunch of JW fans before. Asking them why they buy JW, they give a list of answers. I offer them other options at a lower price. When I get the "it's smooth" I tend to pour them a Dahlwhinnie 15YO (that's mostly where my 1 litre bottle went to), and then tell them it's half the price as the Blue. JW isn't bad. Far from it. It's just a bit bland. Same light I see Glenfiddich 12YO these days. The last bottle or two I had was good. Great, even. But bland. Missing a lot of the notes I learned to love in a good Scotch.

I'm going to say something shocking. Unless you hate the banana note (I don't like banana so it's difficult for me to even say this) in Jack Daniels their whisky is very comparable to these Bourbons. JD old no 7 is the most different but JD Rye and Single Barrel are both quite good.

I'll back you up on this one. When I poured myself a Maker's Mark the other day, the first thing I noted was "damn, this smells very, VERY much like cheap old Jack Daniels. In fact, one of the mentions I had in the Maker's Mark (and the Maker's 46) is that they tasted a tiny bit "thin", which is something I never picked up with JD No7. Gentleman Jack is better, Single Barrel as well. I don't know why, but I pick it up in these two bourbons. Blanton's Gold doesn't have it either. It's way creamier. Perhaps something to do with the filtering? I honestly don't know.

I still prefer the Maker's Mark and the Maker's 46 though. I've still got to give Knob Creek a try. Looking forward to that one, but keeping it for a more special occasion to open.

Friend of mine offered me one of Makers Mark, Makers 46 and Knob Creek - I'm not much of a bourbon drinker (at all) and i have always thought the Makers range was better than the KC - so i took the KC not wanting to take his 'good stuff'

Haven't opened it yet - but will feedback - whats the best way to have it? I normally have my whisky neat and occasionally add water / ice

It depends on the esters that stay behind after aging. Some bourbons keep those short chain esters that give banana flavors, while others keep the long chain esters that provide that creamy mouthfeel.

These chains are formed during fermentation and the type of still and barrel aging plays a major role if it stays or not.

Barrel aging has the biggest effect on these apparently.

Keep in mind that when you're drinking whiskies at a higher proof (in my opinion, anything over 45%) you should considering adding a drop of water to the whisky to really enjoy it. I would try it neat once, to see what it's like, but I've found that tasting it neat before each session tends to burn a bit at the higher proof whiskies, and ruins my palate. Some whiskies I'm OK with like that, but others I like to add a drop or two of water to kill the heat a bit. Not a lot, just a bit. I would recommend doing that with the KC. It's the nicer one of the three when you look at the price, so it would be a shame to ruin it with Coke when JD does that job well enough.

Call these guys....if you're willing to pay double that is.
that's a hard pass from me  ... I like to believe I'm not a cheapskate, but once I know the normal price of something I won't easily pay far above it

Otherwise I can bring in a few bottles if you're willing to share shipping etc. But you're in JHB ?
Cape Town, but seems the MyBB wisdom has spoken, I might give JD Rye or Sazerac Rye a try instead ... WhiskyBrother is tempting me with their heritage day special, might as well make the best of their shipping cost and toss in another bourbon to try

Sazerac is awesome and I'm not even a Rye OR a bourbon fan to be honest.

I haven't really tried or tasted a rye bourbon before. Think I'll have to give it a shot sometime if I can come across a dram.

Us drinkers never learn, you need to order your whiskey before you even open your last bottle.
 luckily not my last bottle, I have a Highland Park 10y and 12y both at about a quarter bottle left, plus a nearly full bottle of Ardbeg 10y and Tamnavulin Double Cask

problem is just the Buffalo Trace is the one I'd like to compare to the Sazerac that is on its way and my bottle of Buffalo Trace is at critical level ... below quarter full, one night of enjoyment and it'll be empty so I'm going to have to avoid that specific bottle for the next few days
