only big peat I've ever had was that xmas edition 3rd from the left, got a huge black friday discount on bottleshop back in the day before they went titsup :ROFL:

decent, but not really my thing, what it gave me is appreciation for the more sophisticated peaty drams out there like Ardbeg which I only tried for the first time afterwards :sneaky:

Spar Tops Village Square Durbanville. Haven't actually opened my Teeling yet. Everyone said it's a "marketing thing" but to be honest this is one of the more interesting Whiskey's I've had. And most of the reviews I've read have had possive things to say. It is very morish and I for one will have no problem buying it again. I challenge anyone on MyBB to grab one and hear their input. R249 bucks... come now :)

This special release is now unobtanium. Sold out in minutes. Available on auctions, but for average of GBP 220 and up.

I was extremely lucky and got mine at retail.

where do you typically get Ardbeg special releases from? (unless of course it is some state secret)

You can search for whiskies to buy here or here. There was one I used to use but, for the life of me, I can't remember the name. It had an animal in the name. Whisky Hippo? >_<

Looking around the websites I buy from, this seems to be the cheapest (outside of auction).

Sometimes special releases make it to SA shores, but very rarely.

Then you can buy it at Whisky Brother, Bottega or Wild About Whisky.

But by then you wil pay absolute premium.

Bottega currently has a great Ardbeg Special Releases and Committee Releases selection, but you need very deep pockets.

For the Arrrrrrrbeg I paid retail (only 'cos a friend of a friend was at the Distillery for this release) , but that price excludes shipping, local Vat and duties.

Now look at the prices... :oops: o_O
 
alright whisky gurus, help me restock the bare necessities ... inspired by a dwindling shelf, things like
and just the general idea of having a selection of tried and tested whiskies at home I've decided I need this, and some of this needs advice

something on the sweeter side:
- no advice urgently needed though still welcome, thinking bourbon vibes and I have Buffalo Trace and Bain's in stock which both qualify, would also classify Sazerac Rye, Glenmorangie Original and what has become my #1 "sweet" dram so far in here: Three Ships Oloroso finish, I'll probably go JD Rye when I run out

- after dabbling in Talisker, Big Peat and a number of others, this category to me comes down to: which readily available Arbeg should I get next? I'm only familiar with the 10yr and the An Oa, both excellent, what next? Wee beastie or a step up from An Oa?

something smooth:
- aka the "Irish" category, more Teeling (which?) or finally try some Green Spot?

something scotch:
- for the lack of a better word, some balance, but filled with proper Scotch character. my regular favourites here are Three ships 10yr, Highland Park 10yr and 12yr ... what next?

something daring:
- not a category I care about much, but something outside of the box, like Tamnavulin Double Cask which I don't really like much, but it doesn't really fit these other categories ... any other red headed stepchildren I should try?

not looking to break the bank, but also not trying to be cheap, focus is on "readily available/easy to get"

Not very helpful but if you can get the highland Park 12 don't bother with the 10 and if you can get the 18or dark origins they are amazing.

So I picked up a bottle of Laphroaig 10 the other day from Checkers; I really enjoy the aftertaste but I am still getting accustomed to the initial taste - less medicinal than I remember but still very interesting and a little dark.
Last night we were watching TV and my wife asked if I smelled a weird burning smell - I said no but she asked if I could check on our sleeping son. Still no fire or anything. After a while she realised it was the Laphroaig vapours she was smelling!

cheers ... and "daring" isn't necessarily a compliment, was just searching for a word, perhaps "different"?

ironically I dislike Tamnavulin because of it, but I get a distinct aniseed flavour from it which I have not had in any other whisky I've tasted ... to me that makes it "different", but maybe I just haven't tasted enough whisky to know it is quite common? :unsure:
 
Aniseed is not common in whisky, no. I love it in my rums, but not sure I'll like it in my whisky.

"readily available/easy to get", daring, blended malt, relatively cheap, goes down well - Bells Special Reserve

My two cents:
  • something on the sweeter side:
    • If you already like Glenmorangie, maybe try Glenmorangie Nectar D'or.
    • Another good option is Auchentoshan Three Wood.
  • something peaty/smoky:
    • I am a big Laphroaig 10 fan, checkers has it for R600.
  • something smooth:
    • If you haven't tried yet, give Redbreast 12 a chance. IMHO it is way better than Green Spot (which is not a bad whisky at all).
  • something scotch:
    • Glendronach (12/15/18), Springbank (10/12/15) ... ?
  • something daring:
    • I recently got a bottle of Kilchoman Sanaig, pretty good whisky. Peat and sherry.
All options are easy to get.
